King of Bullshit: 10% death penalty

Well, if it's so easy to just dodge everything why don't you go make a video with some low defense/low clearspeed build leveling past 95 and see how far you can get?

Just alched maps including map boss and whatever league mechanics you want. No chicken macro obviously and no ignoring eldritch altars. You likely won't even manage 20 maps without something blowing you out of the water. Monsters not hitscanning is irrelevant if they literally spawn all around you attacking you from all directions at once.
There is way too much shit happening at once in this game to avoid all of it and with how map and rare mods work just one wrong thing hitting you can already be the end of it even more so if you don't go the hardcore tank route.

/edit just to clarify because i get the feel we are talking about different things here. I am not saying mechanical skill is meaningless. Dodging stuff like toxic balls and shit by sticking with the "Never stop moving" rule is mechanical skill and it has a big impact on how much you die. My point is that this alone, no matter how good you are, won't allow you to reach level 100. You have to couple that with either a drastic reduce in juice and map mods/difficulty and/or with high amounts of defense investments if you want to have any hope of making it to level 100. Regular alch and go mapping with a glass cannon isn't going to reach 100, even if darkee himself plays it. Nevermind any juice beyond that.

Why is that a remotely fair challenge to the positions we're taking? Part of the skill expression we're talking about lies in NOT playing a low defense or low clear speed character. Make your build better. This is a force multiplier with playing better. Just like defensive layers multiplying mathematically. If you built a bad character you should not be trying to hit 100 and complaining its impossible, you should be grinding fun content to improve your current character or re-roll a better one.

If that's what he is talking about then we would be on the same page, but reading his posts gave me the impression that he is thinking everything in maps can be dodged, no matter the juice and if you get hit/killed during mapping it's just a "git gud" issue i.e learn to dodge. That's just completely unrealistic hence the unrealistic challenge.
I love this game but the Death Penalty is for sadists.
As I have gotten older the 'git gud' sentiment is just excusing bad game design in an otherwise good game. 10 percent xp loss is bad design to me. It clashes with so many elements on what makes an rpg an rpg.

If they removed it, something else that is bad would be complained about.

In what way
^I am also curious about that statement. How does it clash with what makes an rpg an rpg? Almost every rpg has an exp system, and more often than not there is an exp penalty associated with death. Would you rather lose items on death? Forced Hardcore perma-death? Durability isn't a thing so it can't be that. No penalty at all? To me, that last one is most antithetical to rpgs.

There isn't a way. As I have gotten older the 'its bad design' sentiment is just doublespeak for 'I don't like it'.

Why?

I mean getting around death is already a pretty big leap. If we're supposed to suspend our disbelief that our character just reappears alive at the click of a button with no explanation, it seems a triviality by comparison to extend that to the idea that this can happen without some metaphysical 'cost' in 'experience' also applied without explanation.
It is a backwards progress. Should be redesigned. Either let us recover the lost xp or just introduce a different kind of penalty. I know people not fan of repairs but it is still better. We are already punished by portal loss and can't endlessly die on a map or boss. Crazy how many people actually quit the game over the death penalty and it is still ignored. Nothing worse than grinding 20 maps for 10% xp and then lose it to something absolutely out of your control.
