Is anyone actually going to stop playing?

I will probably just go back to Dota. Last played during Breach or Talisman, came back to this league after a friend told me about some of the older leagues (Heist/Harvest). Had more fun, and made more (for a casual, nothing much to you braghards who have 1000 exalts two weeks in).

I don't see a point in slogging with how garbage crafting is. At least in those leagues, you might once every 20 maps, find a yellow item worth a few chaos.
Yes, some people will quit playing. The better question would be "will any significant numbers of people quit playing?" and that would be no, not until someone comes up with some viable competition to POE, and even then it would likely be a game that is as deaf to its players as this one is.

An even better question is "Will people stop spending money?" because that is the only thing that will get attention. I only know of one whale they've beached so its not likely. This isn't the first time they've loudly told us not to bother playing if you can't put in a hundred hours a week, because it is pretty much only the ones that can't who are hurt by this.
I think people forget that games do not compete with just other games in their genre.

time is universal. Every form of entertainment in existence is fighting for a person's time.

If you are playing poe right and you have ANY other interest outside arpgs and that interest happens to have a good game or live service on the table.. there is a pretty good chance you might go an pick that up.

And then you are playing that 2 - 8 hours a day instead of poe.
POE-APEX-HON rinse repeat I play all genres. Updates and content changes just makes things more interesting.

But, do most people only play one game? I know I play POE for awhile, then go and play a different genre (and not because of GGG pissing me off, but because I get bored of the same type of game after awhile). So, when I come around to being in an ARPG mood it doesn't matter how many games in other genres there are. So unless its usual for people to only focus on one game, and I'm the unusual one, other genres don't matter in this context.

If you are the type of guy that only gets enjoyment out of this style of game, that perhaps not. But most people play several different styles, ones that while not ARPGs, ones that can have levels of complications similar to them (like dota for instance).

It is what it is though. Whether you agree with the harvest nerf or not though, the comments on the manifesto like "close your eyes and exalt slam" are so clearly out of touch with the community. Exalted orbs buy me items, not ever used on currency.
Probably, yeah.

Maybe I could be enticed to stick around if they followed this up with,
"PSYCH, we're adding deterministic crafting to everything. These crafts will just be split between harvest, bestiary, fossils, essences, and a new higher tier system coming with the next league for influenced items!"

Or if the next league looks fucking awesome and I expect it to be such a wild amount of loot the fact that I literally can't prog my own damn character and have to trade (ew gross) for everything won't bother me.

Also, if they nerf the shit out of the atlas passives, that probably seals the deal on quitting.

Farming New Vastir this league has been a blast, and I've enjoyed having a reason to play more than one build mechanically.

I'm with you there. That pissed me off more than anything else in the manifesto because it is so ignorant. 99% of the time, RNG is frustrating, not fun. I can deal with off-screen one-shots, crashes, lag, and the obsession with using a trading system that is so outdated it is equivalent to trying to force everyone to use a 56k modem, but nothing takes away my entire desire to play more than the frustration of "gamble-crafting".

I think it is important to distinguish between just another game .. and a competing live service.

For example I love Warhammer total war. when i quit poe because of harvest not returning in heist. i played that game constantly for 2 weeks straight. but then I started looking around for things to do. I crushed many games during that time. This is why d2 remastered isn't really competition to poe. its a small game in comparison.

But before that when I quit poe after betrayal I eventually found Apex legends. And I played that thing straight for months. not once during that time did poe even enter my mind. no forums , no wikis nothing. all apex.

The big difference is that when i was playing little games here and there. every time i finished one was an opportunity for poe to suck me back in.

But competing live services make it their goal in life to make sure that chance never happens.

And that is what could happen here. Poe losing harvest will break the spell for some people.. only for another live service to snare and consume their souls for 6 months to a year.

It will happen. especially now that many of the big name publishers are realizing that maintaining at least one good live service prints all the money in the world.
