In the current state of game, what speaks against vacuum pickups?
This is not about autopickup of stuff without any direct interaction, this is about picking up same-items once you click one of them like this video illustrates:
https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/kz57mo/i_wish_ggg_would_introduce_similar_feature_for/ It seems it's frequently asked for when the topic of "loot" comes up: Vacuum pickup. When you click one item of a type, all "same" items in the vicinity get picked up too. For example clicking one alteration orb will pick up all the other alteration orbs that are close enough to it etc. That would be a huge QoL improvement, reducing clicking in this game seems highly desirable. But it didn't happen yet for some reason, so I wonder why. I have yet to see any argument against that that outweighs the QoL and health benefits. What speaks against such a system in the current state of game? P.S. Before anyone points that out: It could be disabled in party play, just make it a single-player-only feature to avoid problems. €dit: This is just about currency/stackables/consumable stuff (a), not equipment(b). Pacing. Making the game faster and faster isn't going to help it. We already don't care about loot in a loot driven game. Adding your vacuum idea would just make that worse.
I'll add that I wouldn't mind a system where if you pick up a currency item all the other currency items within range of equal or higher value get picked up too. All the extra clicks to pick up stuff really aren't needed after you've indicated that you'll start picking them up. Especially stuff like perandus coins. Really annoying to have to pick up a dozen different stacks. Last edited by Shagsbeard#3964 on Dec 18, 2020, 7:21:01 AM

Shagsbeard pretty much covers it, personally I would prefer an option where a vast majority of loot just didn't drop at all lol
Currency only might get a pass but i doubt they will include. Personally i'd love them to slow down the game slightly but speed up the tat collection elements, picking up splinters is one of the few archaic game practices still around that I think genuinely is worthless its like the least elegant solution to a problem. My enjoyment of the game goes up considerably when i reach the time in a league where i no longer have to pickup a majority of loot, thats kinda sad when you think about it in an ARPG :/ |

Okay, I should have made a clearer distinction. This is just about currency/stackables/consumable stuff (a), not equipment(b).
When I click one instance of a stackable (a) it's clear that I want to pick up that type, so I shouldn't need to click a ton more to pick all the others that dropped too. The perandus example you gave is the epitome of that. I'm not talking about vacuum pickup - ing equipable items (b), there the player decision to pick it up should remain for every single item. Is there anything that speaks against the (a) type of vacuum pickup? (OFC a rework where stuff only drops in stacks instead of dozens of single instances would also be cool, but that seems like much more work to achieve.) |

Great idea. Let's start with currency items.

Just leave things you don't consider worth picking up on the ground.
Or use a very strict filter. How hard can that be. |

Such a function for currency would have a small but distinct effect on game play. I have risked death numerous times in order to pick up loose currency on the fly in Heist; it's get it or leave it when you're under Lockdown. Just snagging that one Wisdom Scroll in order for all other, higher currencies to 'port into my inventory, for example, would remove much drama from some narrow escapes, indeed! ='[.]'=

The answer is "weight of items".
GGG or at least Chris is of the opinion that items lose weight if getting them gets automated. I guess he want's players to make a conscious decision everytime they pick something up and determine whether the item in question has enough "weight" to be worth picking up. Personally i think this more on the ridiculous side of design choices that GGG has made but i doubt they will change them. Their design philosphy is stuck 20 years in the past. That has it's good sides and it's bad sides, this is one of the latter. It's kinda mindblowing to me how he can actually talk about weight of items in a game where even casuals don't even bother picking up 99% of the shit that drops. The primary point of loot in this game is to give the servers something to calculate, not to be picked up by anyone. |
