You still should, then you can atleast say you competed and had fun.

You mean because they are more experienced?

I can tell you as someone who played in the alpha, when there's an update, things can change (read: might change but don't have to) dramatically. That particular combo or idea you had for your build might not be worth anything with the update. Maybe it still is. There's no way to know for sure until it's deployed and you start playing. So just because someone has played in the alpha (or beta now) with a previous build doesn't mean it'll still work out with the new patch. It helps level the playing field for all parties involved.

Will there be anyway to see where on the list you are as you are playing? Like a continuously updating list of the most experienced users? Im guessing /ladder will do this right?

The '/ladder' command will show the top ten in the league. Alternately, you can view the full ladders on this website so you can try giving it a quick refresh when you're in town.

I'm sure that even if you weren't in alpha, you could do well if you played the game in beta a bit now. (ok I must be the one with most played in the beta, but you can do it even with less ...)
From what I've seen you can be around 35 in 4 hours with the current build, can't wait to see how it goes :)

Anything special we have to do to sign up, or do we simply have to be logged in when it starts and make a new character on the ladder when its available?

I might take a shot at this, even though I would've preferred hardcore (playing a tank) and I'm from Holland so the time is rather odd.

Still, It'll be fun to put my week of PoE experience to the test. I hope to see more of these events. And perhaps some other prizes in the form shiny orbs for example :).
