I'm just talking about what most people think of when they hear certain words.
Ninja - badass (too generic though) Assassin - badass (generic, but was in their last game so the best fit imo) Thief - Not that generic for a game.. but just not badass Rogue - The most badass of all, imo. Rogue? Makes me think of whatserface from X-Men. Oh, yeah. Rogue.
...See, it all comes down to association, and no writer can control that, really. Besides, it's set 250 years after Gw1. Not all of the old classes 'survived' all this time. Assassin in Gw1 was a Canthan class, and Cantha isn't even accessible in Gw2...yet. So while Assassin might fit the old one, it doesn't really fit this one. Just as engineer didn't fit gw1 at all; I was very wary when I first heard they were making that a class. But think of how far technology has come in our world in 250 years. To go from melee/magic to rudimentary firearms? Not unbelievable at all. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

Personally, I also enjoyed calling the "Thief" class a "Rogue" instead.
