Diablo 3 OPEN BETA

no matter how much gore and fog is in a game, if that content is stylized and cartoonish, it's simply not going to give the same feeling as if it weren't.

This is why D2 felt one way, POE feels similar, and D3 makes me chuckle.

Why not D1 or D2? Both have grimmer atmosphere than D3. Otherwise, PoE.

Besides, how would the absence of other grim ARPGs make Diablo III look grimmer?

Thing is: Diablo III may try to look grimdark, but it's stylized and over-the-top (as has repeatedly been said). And that just doesn't work to support a serious atmosphere.

Go, watch Evil Dead. Watch Braindead. They're gorn to the MAX. And yet they are a cheerful hackfest to which you will shout "Off with his head! Yesss, there it goes flying!"
And playing Diablo III really evokes the same reaction from me.

Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, mind you. I love the Brain/Evil Dead films.

I have yet to see something in PoE to have better atmosphere than D3.. but okey..our opinions may be just different.

But why not D1 or D2? We were kids...At least I was..when I was playing D1... I played D1 pretty recently and while nostalgia was really strong and I remembered places where I almost shat my pants..but it was just that..nostalgia.. It wasn't scary anymore..and never will be here or in another ARPG probably ...we are not kids anymore

what is important however it's atmosphere.. and Diablo 3 has feel much closer to Diablo 1 than Diablo 2 has. And while I like
Torchlight was all colorful and angular but still managed to portray a better overall dark atmosphere (especially with the excellent voice acting of the narrator in story segments and music by the same people/orchestra who did Diablo 2 music) than the blurfog in D3.
So I've played through the open beta a few times.

It's ok. I didn't get the same sense of amazement I got from my first hours of PoE. So far it seems like they've made it too non-random (in terms of drops, maps & monsters) for my taste but that might change. I'll play it for, well, a lot of hours.

While playing it I'll miss the character building, crafting and community feeling of playing a smaller game from PoE. When I'm back to PoE I guess I'll miss something D3, not sure what yet though.
How the hell are you people actually playing? I'm in the US, and the servers have been down more than they have been up. I *think* I might like it, but they keep rebooting the servers.

Path of Exile has been far more stable, so far. D3 goes down more than a North Korean rocket.

I'm from Europe, and for me it's really lucky I have a non-busy weekend. Have managed to log in thrice so far. First time, I played through with a Demon Hunter, second time with a Monk (and finished Leoric when the server was two minutes from being taken down for maintenance) and third time, I started a barbarian.
in the mean time I'm doing housework and hang around these here forums a lot ;-).

I've played like 8 hours.. it's not really hard at all.
Also, D3 is dealing with people in the hundred thousands logging on simultaneously
''Stand amongst the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honor matters.
The silence is your answer.''

Lucky for you. I've had fun so far with the Barbarian and the Demon Hunter, but it has booted quite frequently. Mind you, this is my first experience with it, so it might be different if one is a dedicated Beta tester. I'm not, just open beta, but I have a great internet connection.

I suspect the European servers are less overloaded than the US servers. We've had a rough time of it. From what I can tell, it is fun. I hope to God they get the server issues worked out during the stress test, or May 15 is going to be a parade of wailing and gnashing of the teeth.

I'll be doing it too, because hey, gaming is gaming :D.

Still love PoE. Can't wait for the 6th character.
