What part of PoE is actually supposed to be fun?

Serious question... What part of PoE is actually supposed to be fun?

I was contemplating logging on, then thought for a minute what I fancied doing in-game. After about 10 minutes I had nothing...

Sure there are things I tolerate doing, e.g Delve. but it's not 'fun'. It's mindlessly grinding for a week searching for RNG boss nodes. In the hopes that you a) Find one & b) It doesn't have stupid mods.

Mapping is OK until you get randomly off-screen 1 shot, sit back and just say WTF, nice waste of the last 'X' hours... Or until you realize you're not actually doing anything 'fun'... just walking around one-shotting everything & picking up orbs that vanish in a month's time.

Not even going to mention Sirus...

Crafting used to be another thing I liked doing, these days it's just irritating. You spend 50Ex and come out with nothing because rolling mods is so diluted it's laughable.

So... whats actually fun for you here?

Honestly, I'm missing the old days, where you'd walk around (at normal speed) opening chests, actually seeing the pack of mobs you encounter, etc.

Yesterday I contemplated if I want to eat a candybar. Before I opened the package, I took a moment and thought: do I really need a candybar right now? What makes a candybar worth my time? I could be eating chicken instead.

When I was younger, I used to love candybars. They're so sweet! They were great while they lasted, but now I grow frustrated with my fat belly. In fact, I can't even see my p... anymore.

So yeah, you need some chicken in your life right now. Come back and try the next candybar, then start off fresh. It's gonna be a nice candybar, I promise.

PoE is far from 'fun' it's grind, of course, and it's absorbing. You can run maps for hours and the time flies by. I enjoy myself more in PoB or building a hideout. I guess the 'fun' for most people comes from having a broken overpowered build or a HH and mindlessly destroying content but you can have the same feeling levelling. Or if you're rich you can have fun crafting OP gear or others enjoy scamming for fun.

PoE now is basically a mindless blur of explosions and effects, your rarely need to engage your brain, muscle memory is far more important. The fun in PoE comes from places other than the main game.

PoE isn't a 'fun' game for me.

For me this game is not about fun as there is no skill to work on. Its about achievements. About goals. I enjoy min max characters and make them possible to go to lvl 100 or kill bosses. And from time to time trade for currency or rarely to farm bosses - like it was with Sirus, until they nerfed map drop and game become same crap as it was before.

This game is 7/10. Its waste of time, but I like when whole screen vanish.. for a while.

If you can't answer the question for yourself and you still log in, you need to work out a way to reassess your priorities.

There are a bunch of semantic arguments so far in the thread that try to define the game in terms other than fun, but the reality is that most people don't do things without getting something out of it.

Whether you get fun, fulfillment, progression, or whatever other sense of enjoyment from the game, you get something. If you don't, you wouldn't be playing it.

For people like the OP, they get a sense of hearkening to a better time. They don't get what they want out of the game now, but staying engaged with the game is a bridge to what they used to get out of it. It's not really a problematic thing, unless it gets to a point where they feel trapped into it and can't find a way to break free from it despite it bringing them only disappointment. In a healthy person with a healthy mind, they are able to assess the thing they are partaking in, decide that they no longer enjoy it, and move on.

Most people who are in this state grip onto the idea that they are staying around to "fix" the problems they see in the game, despite extremely limited evidence that any such thing would ever be likely to happen. Still, this is how they justify to themselves the time they spend in a pass-time they wish they were no longer engaging in.

If you have to convince yourself to log in, or spend 10 minutes working out what you like about an activity you are choosing to engage in, try and find a different activity that don't require you to jump through mental hoops for. People change, games change. Learn to move on.

People play games they find fun. They complain about games that are frustrating for no apparent reason but they still continue to play them.

Everyone complaining about PoE now agrees that parts of it were better at one point. They have a previous reference.

So the people saying go play something else if you don't like it are like a doctor saying don't use that arm when you tell them you can't move it. Or it would be like me narrowing the streets in your city by 50% and telling you " don't drive if it's not fun or too difficult for you now."

The people complaining have a right to complain, and they have a right to stay and keep playing. Otherwise why complain if you're just going to quit? The game needs to be changed to allow more versatility and more effective builds instead of just zoom zoom kill zoom kill. You can look at all the options in the game and realize that over 80% of them are worthless because they don't go along with the meta and the meta has determined the design of the entire last 20-30% of the games content.

This - is - shit.

The game existed one way and is progressively getting more funneled into one way of playing and the people who put money and time into this game so it COULD turn into whatever the devs wanted are being ignored in favor of nerd fest youtube streamers.

Almost every game company that ignored complaints on a niche title like PoE have ended up ultimately folding the title due to people quitting. PoE is just lucky because new players don't fully understand what they are getting into until late late game. This tactic is so people will think the game is awesome and spend money early, then they don't care if those people quit. Sadly we have the internet, and reviews are a thing.. every day veteran players are complaining more and more and steering new people away from playing. This will eventually take a turn for the worse it just hasn't happened yet.

I mean do any of you play WoW anymore? It took a while right? Sorry if you do but it's a good example. Look at all the "TRY AGAIN AND GET A CUDDLY PET FOR FREE " garbage they have to do now just to try and rake in some players. This is the future of PoE as well if they don't turn the focus of the game back to fun and AWAY from elitism.
