Why do people say this stuff? Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 both had death penalties. As far as I know it is NOT an MMO feature.
The death penalty in D2 was why I finally quit playing it.
I see it like this: your character died. The lesson is learned. Subtracting XP is a 'screw you' after the fact. I don't see it as in any way necessary to learn "try not to die".
In a very grind heavy game the death penalty equates to...more grinding.

you dont see it necessary to learn not to die? so i guess you dont see it necessary in racing games to learn how to drive? one of the most stupid " arguments" ive heared in this forums yet.
and ill just say what i say in all of these threads:
xp penalty is 100% fine. random deaths due to desync, control loss or stupid mob combinations are not.

The lesson of death is not learned if there is no punishment. In-fact, players will use death to transport themselves favorably and do other toxic things when death has no meaning. The only thing you learn from cheap death is that you can exploit it as a mechanic.

Not at all what I'm saying. My point is that dying is enough to teach that lesson. I don't need to have XP subtracted to learn it.

and what exactly will teach someone? the 5 secs it takes to run to the tp and the place you died?
ive been stuck for 3 days on lvl 79 cause of retarded desync/stunlock deaths in maps. i know that the exp penalty is not nice when it happens. but penalty free deaths are far worse.
oh and btw on my first char i couldnt solo from mid cruel onward since i died way too much to have a chance at leveling. so i joined groups.
ofc if you want only to solo, want a squishy/bad build, and demand free deaths then maybe this type of game just isnt for you.

QFT
Look at BL2 - without any meaningful death mechanic and the fact that you can be raised over and over, leads most tough battles to be nothing but zerg fests.
Now, is the XP penalty a good one? Personally, I'd rather have a debt system, so that you never lose progress... relatively speaking ... the hill just keeps getting higher.

and it would be equal to 15% required for next lvl up from previous so you couldn't cheat with play risky after lvl up ;)

Couldn't agree more, plain ridiculous to get a death penalty because of the incompetence to deliver a properly working game.
Hey let's make some more microtransactions and continue to beg for money right GGG :p
