Exp Loss is freaking unbalanced
" I never understand this. If the only viable solution is "don't die" then there is a separate game mode for that: Hardcore. Default is supposed to be different from hardcore. |

People are talking for the sake of talking. Even 'walls' would have already understood by the time, why there must be a death penalty and why the way it has been working is intended and most true one; but expecting 'others' to understand this would be a suicide of corpse. And ever since I never intend to suicide, so it continues...

" The current amount of the XP penalty is rather arbitrary. 7.5% in Cruel is nothing. In Merciless @ 15%, this stretches from a little ouch to holy crap what a bummer. At high enough levels, even a 5% loss is still well more than enough to discourage death zerging or anything else. Since I regard that observation as obviously true, this is why I have suggested that the penalty be moved to a normalized time investment in minutes M starting at level L, where L is probably 70 or so. How many IRL minutes M lost do you think is sufficient to discourage a player from bad builds, play styles, or bad in game behavior? Now that part isn't obvious, and is rather subjective. I'd say about 30, though. --C p.s. since people sometimes pick at this, minutes M are intended to be normalized to the amount of XP the average player earns during the time period. Hence, particularly good players would be less penalized by this penalty than bad ones. That seems fair. Last edited by Courageous#0687 on Apr 1, 2013, 10:19:02 AM

" Nice suggestion. How about this:
Spoiler
M = L

It should remove 1 hours worth of active exp gain. At the moment the amount removed scales too high.

" Well first of all you are very slow, death at 85 was about 4-5 hours of farming 66/67 maps so if it is 8-10 hours at 83 for you than you are going pretty slow. Your statement about the XP penalty only being reasonable if you can recuperate it in 30-40 minutes is completely arbitrary and has no substantive meaning. It is simply an opinion and nothing more. As is the statement that the punishment should not scale as you get higher level. In fact there are reasons why it should and they have been stated in this thread. The fact that you ignore them does not mean they do not exist. You are climbing a ladder, the higher you go, the harder you fall. That is a very simple way to look at it. If you want to hit 100 you are going to have to not die. Personally I enjoy that fact. |

" This is crap. What does dying to dc, or being one shot by a boss off screen where you can't even see what killed you, have to do with playing PROPERLY? I don't necessarily have a problem with xp loss on death, I just have a problem with the ridiculous amount that you lose. |

It's a necessary evil. Nobody ever really figured out how to add difficulty to the ARPG genre, so you have to add tedium so the risk vs reward doesn't get completely out of whack.

" Opinion vs Opinion. Winner? Hmm. BTW, When I said 10-15 hours, I took in consideration the fact that one is not a farming robot, takes a piss, eats a banana, goes through stash, picks up loot, alchs some white crap from time to time. Also, I didn't follow any build guides, this is basically my first character which I made as close as possible to a pure caster glass cannon (to be able to enjoy it), and because of that, I do slow runs in certain map/mob configurations. It kept me alive since lvl 80 or so... You need to account for situations like these too... And I didn't even take into consideration the amount of time that is needed to farm the currency needed to do maps. placeholder for creative sig Last edited by Undon3#5633 on Apr 1, 2013, 1:38:06 PM

" I think you misinterpret. If you are playing properly you would never get 1-shot from off screen. 15% is not ridiculous. All XP progress would be ridiculous. " Pure caster glass cannon? no wonder you complain about XP loss. The game does not need to account for people that ignore survivability (glass cannons), in fact it should punish them imo, and currently it does that. Not sure why you need to farm for currency to run 66-67 maps, you should get plenty of alts just from vendoring the crap that drops in the maps. Last edited by thepmrc#0256 on Apr 1, 2013, 1:51:50 PM
