OR...there could be someone from GGG...

Free game, no sub, no real hack tracing and items that could sell for hundreds of bucks. Tempting, isnt it ?

Dumb. Why would they need to hack, they could just create the items and sell them.

They can track the stolen items, they just aren't willing to restore because of what it does to the economy. In diablo 3 for example, if your account was compromised you could get a restore, so what people did was give all their stuff to their friends, fake a compromise, and then had their items restored. GGG doesn't want this to happen, so a no restoration policy was put into place.

If they can track stolen items, how does their solution make any sense?

- Delete Stolen Items
- Restore Account
- have happy customers

I steal item A from you. I trade item A to another player for item B. This player trades item A to even another player for Item C. I trade item B to a completely different player for item D. What now. Who gets to keep what?

Checkmate atheists.

That would only happen if they took their sweet ass time.

So their ability to handle this correctly depends on their ability to handle requests promptly. Perhaps they can't. But they should try for something better than what exists currently.

They have 2 million accounts and last I checked, something like 17 staff members. Good luck with that.

Weren't you the same person claiming that only 0.001% of their userbase has been hacked?

And i never said that my suggestion was the ONLY way to do it. If you re-read what i said, i ended with... '..they should try for something better than what exists currently.'

It is not perfect the way it is now.

They don't restore items because it's just easier and better for everyone (except the person who was compromised).

Most people don't know they've been hacked until well after the hack has taken place. That gives the hackers plenty of time to launder the stolen items. Trading it through hundreds of accounts. GGG would not be able to tell if that item is in the hands of a hacker or not after a few trades.

It's just not worth the time to investigate every case of this for whether it is fraud or not.

Yea probably. But you'd think there'd be some way to improve upon the system.

When it comes down to it though, it probably doesn't make any financial sense.

Since money lost from hacked people quitting is probably less than the cost it would take to properly help people who have been hacked... fuck 'em, let them quit.

Just sad is all.

That's what makes this game different than a lot of other online games.. both for good and bad.

A user is only generating revenue when they're purchasing items. There are no subscriptions. So if a user quits or a user plays, it generally makes no difference to the revenue stream of the game. If they'd already purchased items and quit, then GGG already has their money. If they never purchased items and quit, no real loss.. and you can't really count "potential" loss if the user would have stayed and purchased an item because that isn't really relevant.

I know a lot of people who will never purchase a micro-transaction, but love the game and play it. They're just as good or bad as a user quitting. They are worth $0 as a player.

And I don't mean for this to sound like GGG are greedy and only care about the money aspect.. because that isn't the case. I'm just saying from a development/resource point of view, it costs a lot of money to attempt to restore items, etc.. it can damage the economy.. and there's no guarantee that by restoring their items that you as a company are going to make any money from that user sticking around longer.
There a lot of other reasons to contact support other than being hacked. Also, lets say they started return items if they got to the account fast enough before they were traded away / moved - hackers would start laundering the items through additional accounts. There really is no good way for GGG to win.

Yea it's a shame. Hackers are usually the ones who win.

Blizzard at least profits from hackers... GGG has to just eat it :(
