Having us kill civilians in Oriath Square is tasteless.

And beat the Awakener with them?
Alva: I'm sweating like a hog in heat
Shadow: That was fun

There's always at least one.

Congratulations for being "that guy."

In this case you are "that guy". This is ridiculous... You never played the "No Russian" mission in CoD? That is killing people (although for me it is still just a game), not this. And if you think it's unpleasant then you have some kind of psychological problem cause the normal is not feel anything.
Bethesda is known for having good ideas and terrible realization of them. GGG is a Bethesda subsidiary or what?

Agreed, making them 'hostiles' in terms of targeting was always a bad choice. Why these townsfolk but not the slaves a couple of zones earlier, or the 'innocent' wild animals roaming around various areas? There's no coherent message to it, it's pointlessly gratuitous.

There is a message - that if you want to be a humane god-like being, you're gonna have to work for it i.e. work to control yourself. Yeah I know it's tricky to avoid killing them, but it is possible. That's the point - you have to learn to control your reality-shattering abilities if you don't want them to cause needless mayhem. As the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility. And since PoE doesn't exactly have narrative choices for us to showcase that humanistic responsibility, this serves as a (somewhat blunt) gameplay equivalent.

Do they drop loot? If yes then sure - kill them all. If not then meh, at least they give some exp, right?

Funny, isn't it, that these are the same sort of "people" you're hob-nobbing with in Lioneye's Watch in Act 6, and back in Oriath in the Epilogue. If you could kill them there, too, would you? =0[.]o=

But they're not the same sort of people. Oriathans exiled you and depending on your class may have treated you or your people badly (marauder and witch for sure). The people in Lioneyes watch take you in and give you solace and they're outcasts themselves.

During the Epilogue it's a good question but maybe most of them have died and you feel they've been given a lesson. They'd probably treat you like Geralt in Witcher 3 gets treated in the city and you'd probably feel the same about them as he feels.

This thread is a fun thought exercise

Agree.
The Exile is both a villain and a hero.

exile is mostly a villain, as we have seen from the story so far, the exile kills the shaper than elder, then conquers the atlas and becomes the greatest evil.

Nope. They give neither loot nor xp. There'd be even more crying if they did. Killing them is meant to be unnecessary.

Yep, I know that there are (much) greater problems with the game than this in 2019.

Yep, I know that some of the less thoughtful denizens of this forum will ridicule this very topic being brought up. ("STFU, SJW!")

But I have to say it: It just feels gross.

I know that killing innocents in video games is a thing. I actually don't necessarily object to it. In some cases it drives a narrative forward, or is even done to try and force new perspectives upon the players. It's never easy to do well, but it does have a potentially legitimate role in narrative design.

But we all know that PoE doesn't have such narrative aspirations. In the absence of the above, having the hero of the story kill "frightened citizens" (as they are labeled), just because they are also being targeted by the rebels who are against the civilians' government, doesn't feel edgy nor impactful. It feels repulsive. Not everyone wants to play a villain, so why virtually force it upon us by flagging these NPCs as enemies?

Easy fix: Keep their behavior, and make them untargetable.

Are they really innocent? Lets think about. The whole society of Oriath is around Templars. And they do what they do. And society benefits from what they do.

Again - are they innocent? Not really. They are spoild, rotten rich class and we lead THE REVOLUTION!!!!1111one like in France.

The last part was joke but i think You get the idea.
Kind of hard to do when you are dropping 23 Arc mines and almost all enemies explode into ice chunks.

A fictional narrative consists, by definition, of "not. real. people."

Are you saying that all fictional narratives are therefore immune to criticism?
