PoE Real money pros and cons
" You missed a comma, so I'm curious if this is some sort of command that we should piss off the OP. I don't think that's necessary. Now if you HAD a comma, then you'd be telling the OP to piss off, in which case, given that the OP made a sound argument with which people soundly disagreed, I also feel that is not necessary. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

" Hyperbole is SO much fun! Feel free to add the implicit "to this thread" after each time I used 'necessary'. Clearer? Yes? Excellent. " That's debatable. It's GGG's game, and if a player likes the game and thinks RMT is a problem (not only for him as a player, but the game as a whole), I think it's perfectly reasonable for that dude to go "hey, this is bad, fix it!". Barring the occasional silly and insubstantial thread where someone might attack 'noobs' for buying gear, the majority of the posts I've seen against RMT I believe come from a legitimate concern. Then we can argue if it's whine, feedback, qq or whatever you wanna call it, but that's just semantics. As for their control over it, there are ways you might design the game to cockblock RMTers, like I mentioned, so in a way, it's fixable. I will agree that judging people based on them spending money on a game is silly. The same judgment can be done over iPhones, clothes, trips, drugs, brands, food or whatever. To each its own. " But aren't your (and mine) posts in this thread also unnecessary? The pen is mightier than the sword, yet it is more permanent than a pencil.

I know this will mostly just be a troll thread anyway, but a simple reply to the OP:
The problem is not really the buyers. It's the sellers. The larger a market there is for RMT in the game, the more RMT farmers, botters, spammers, and other bottom-feeders we will have infesting our lovely online game community. That means GGG has to pay for a ton of extra people (or bots) playing the game solely for the sake of damaging its in-game economy for profit, with no intention of ever buying microtransactions. That means all of us have to put up with more lag, and the inflationary effects of all this extra currency flooding into the economy. You're absolutely right that GGG can never completely eliminate RMT. That said, there is a HUGE difference between websites you can use for RMT that will get you banned if you get caught, and openly endorsing RMT with something like Diablo 3's RMAH. Dramatically more people will engage in RMTs if it's A) allowed, and B) more convenient. This, in turn, means more of all the problems in the previous paragraph. |

" Given that I personally define the necessity of a thread to be that which responds to/argues for or against the original post, yes. But my task as a moderator is also to keep the peace, and someone telling the OP to piss off (or commanding us to piss off the OP, depending on whether or not the comma absence was deliberate) is unnecessary and it was necessary of me to point that out it was unnecessary given that had I not people may assume it was necessary or at the very least acceptable and that's not necessarily a good thing. Back on-topic now please. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between. I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period. The problem with that is how? How can it be "fixed"? I would hate with a passion to see PoE turn into anything even remotely resembling Diablo III in the way that post game cash transactions were handled. Would hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it.
That said, the idea that trading through secondary markets can be controlled, even by a large company, let alone an independent studio like GGG is just not feasible - short of making everything soulbound, or account bound, there's no way for these sorts of transactions to be monitored. About the only thing I can think of to try and dent it a little is to make the most valuable items achievable in some form of non-RNG based way, for example allow for Exalted "shards" to drop, 20 of which combined together makes an Orb. Of course, the shard drops are still RNG but it's less of an all-or-nothing approach to them. Last edited by OzHawkeye#0924 on Mar 18, 2013, 1:53:26 AM

I'm not a troll, i sit at work bored and try to stir up conversation on game forums. Trolls generally post much shorter "hooks" or even one liners. I only troll Blizzard, cause f--k them for not having jewels, runes, charms and the rest of the list i loved from D2 (sorry, a tad off topic). |
