If there was no penalty on death, it would likely not even be risky at all, at least for 99% of it ... " Who is making glass cannon builds for end-game? Let's not make stuff up for sake of argument. Glass cannon builds are not happening in Path of Exile. Experience loss on death is also not a risk, it is annoyance. You do not go to kill Uber Elder if you are at 80% experience. You will go there when you just leveled up. Real cost/risk to death is loss of portal--this is not material when you play solo. |

" Even though "all the time" was a little bit of an exaggeration, I'm not talking about glass canon (that is a relative notion though), I'm just talking about build that either the player does not know the limits of (and dies too often), or just lack something, making them die enough to hinder the level quite heavily. Experience loss on death is literally a risk. Else (assuming no penalty on death here), where is the risk of running a t15 corrupted map with 3 damage mod and 50% inc monster life ? (Don't go with the nonsensical "you loose a portal", if 6 portals isn't enough to finish the map for you, the character was far away from having the power level to run it in the first place. If you play in a 6 players party, the rest of the map/loot ain't lost, other players still get it, plus the security of being in a group is already more than enough already) - There isn't, there just would not be any. The only case where content remains "risky" without a penalty on death is content that is gated-enough to cost a lot to access to begin with. Do we want much more of that instead of an xp penalty on death ? I for sure don't, hell no, we have enough of that. " i play games with harsh penalties alot but that one sucks really hard why do other games manage to punish the player but not until he rage quit the game instantly? oh wait its good game design thats what ggg never had ... look at diablo look at grim dawn in grim dawn you have the grave exp pickup but if you f** up youll die one shot by the boss and lose the grave so no exp for you. but wait there is more the boss heals up everytime you die ... so you have to start over the bossfight mostly so no body throwing .... why cant we have that? oh wait that would be not harsh enough wouldnt motivate people to grind low tier maps until 100 right i forgot :D this league i've managed to play up to lvl 95 i could run further maybe 97 but thats it it makes "NO FUN" but please dont come up with the argument "go play grim dawn then" because grim dawn is offline with optional mp i dont like the unstable economy (and nope poe doesnt have that either) "There are Penalties in the Game, no one's complaining about them"

So you think Uber Elder healing when you die would be less punishing? It took me 24 portals (3 failed sets) to kill uber elder on my one and only attempt. I would have failed that 4th time too if he healed after every death. I need all my portals to kill some things. That’s what happens when you don’t have the best gear and can one shot bosses. You want to rage quit because you lost experience. I would rage quit if I couldn’t continue a fight. Taking my portals would suck. Healing the boss would suck. You aren’t giving any acceptable replacement penalties.

Power disparity between character archetypes/builds is just way to big to do this, you'd just fuck up 80% of the builds that could do it now and leave only the fotm setups able to kill UElder.
