Path of Exile, Gameplay Criticism

This league, it looks like people are experiencing the 1-shots a little more intensely than usual.

Keep in mind, there aren't many other ways to threaten a player when a game is balanced around overblown healing and damage (a rate war). We notice the damage part being too high (when we get zero-shotted), but rarely do we talk about our healing also being too high (when we can gain multiples of our HP total in an instant). The two are inseparable parts of a major problem.

What kind of boss mechanic could really be added that every player would actually pay attention to (other than a 1-shot void zone)? Healing debuffs? Time limits? These are all band-aids.

How about we work on making the existing resource systems (HP, MP, ES, etc) actually meaningful?
just found your thread and video. +1

I think it's great that abilities like Arcane Cloak and the Archmage support are trying to give some meaning to the mana pool by increasing the demand for mana. You deserve credit for this and for a lot of recent changes that are trying to add flavor to the real-time parts of the game.

Regarding the mana rate-war, the problem remains that we can generate/drain mana too predictably and easily. You've started to address the "consumption" side of the mana rate-war, but it will never be solved unless you address the "production" side also.

This is one of the three supporting videos linked in the description of the Gameplay Criticism video about the "rate war" concept specifically, just replace "healing" with "mana production" and "damage" with "mana consumption": (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ep9f_Hgz6D8).

I worry especially about abilities like these actually making the rate war worse. Here's some thought food: imagine that abilities designed to be big mana consumers (or supports that make them into one) also were unable to leech.

Thanks for watching. I hope this can help make the game better.

Edit (3/13/2020):

These are the 3 videos linked in the description of the one above covering the three individual topics in more detail:

This is the followup video responding to many of the counterarguments in this post: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0ZGXR7qV7o

Finally managed to find this thread and video from my posting history, as searches proved fruitless. Too much favouring by google/etc of irrelevant videos with many views.

The game still has these exact same problems, except it's arguably even worse now. I highly suggest people to watch the analytical videos made by Khalixxa. He lays out the problems with the "rate wars" and XP loss quite well.

I came back to the game and tried out Ruthless mode as it sounded like a better version of POE. It was indeed interesting without so much zoom-zoom and every enemy in the game being a loot pinata. But you just can't escape the underlying problems with the game, with GGG's design decision, and their "balance" of the game around the streamers and other 'members' of the 0.1% community that always speak the loudest here, on reddit and in various Discord channels.

It's tempting to go over the ground again and lay out my frustrations, but it's been done to death (hoho-lol) and GGG clearly isn't interested in listening to it, so what's the point. Nothing has changed, and I bet nothing will change on these mattes in POE 2 either. I just feel even more stupid for coming back to the game and giving it another try. When a game feels inherently unfair and makes me feel like crap, it's best to step away and do something else. GGG have made the the game for streamers and whales, so let them enjoy it while I find something else to enjoy instead. Cause there is no enjoyment in this one. The underlying problems are too deep and ingrained.
