I don't have huge problems with the syndicate fights most the time, I die from cheap shots occasionally here and there which is annoying but I get along just fine. Well, I just had a fortification event and I was laughed out of the room by "It that Fled", Haku and Tora. None of them was high ranked or geared up beyond belief and still it wasn't really a fight at all. They basically executed me on sight until my XP bar was depleted and I eventually threw the towel. I must stress that I'm used to get the better of the syndicate members most of the time, I adapted my build to include more defense mechanisms and still this could happen to me. Needless to say the fortress was completely filled with portals, spawns and effects, fighting on a black screen wouldn't have made much of a difference as I couldn't see anything anyway.
Don't get me wrong, as somebody who really enjoys games like the Dark Souls series I don't mind getting beat up by a challenging encounter from time to time - even though it's a bit strange to have such encounters in games like PoE with a core gameplay that's not exactly well suited for that kind of difficulty - and I'm not hesitant to say that a player struggling everytime the syndicate shows up should step up his game, but this fight was just ridiculous. Maybe I'm finally getting old, but I'd rather think that we actually have a problem with encounter design and balancing, whether those advocating for not nerfing them realise it or not. |

The fort encounters are DEFINITELY the biggest problem. I would love to see a general decrease to syndicate member damage, but I would resign myself to contentment if fort encounters only were nerfed.

Fortification encounters are tough as hell, no doubt about it, but I do love them as well. I die here and there, and are on the verge of dying countless times every encounter. I don't necessarily think it's the encounter design that's way out of whack - but some of the characters. It That Fled, Tora, Janus, Hillock and Haku are always difficult, even alone. Bunch 2-3 together and you'll be lucky to tell the tale.
But ultimately I'm having fun, so they have done something right. Not exactly very HC friendly, but they can't exactly balance the game around that either. I definitely like this league a hell of a lot more than Incursion or Delve :) |
