Actually, GGG did it wrong with Azurite.
Because? Harbinger shards were aids, picking up azurite without that interaction would be cancer.
If you think, it is not worth the click to pick something up then why even bothering if it is not picked up at all? It is a single click, done in a blink of an eye. Why even care about loot that is not actively collected? Why even playing to get it? Just put a timer and add it to your stash. Autoloot clutters your bag and you have to click the loot in your bag anyway.
It is a core feature of ARPG for 20 years now that loot has to be picked up actively, if and only if a player decides that it is worth the effort. Maybe it is time for a change, but I don't think that autoloot would anything to the actual game play but removing something from it.
IMHO, introducing autoloot would remove an inportant game play interaction spoiling ppl to ask for even more of it. Autoloot is the road to a totally different gameplay. Even having the crawler collecting my loot is a spoiler for me. It is much more fun to see everything dropping when killing the mob corresponding. It feels like loosing the connection on how drop is earned: By killing mobs, collecting it, and identifying the good stuff. Instead loot is connected to an excort mission. Why do I actually kill the mobs on the road? A right, because the crawler would not collect anything. But how do I know which mobs drop the good stuff? We have no idea...
On top, loot fountains are just boring. They feel like cluttered to you feet spoiling me for every single exitement of every single drop. And autoloot would spoil me the exitment of making the choise if I want to pick an item up, because of potential value. You are here to kill mobs? Then why do you even care about loot? If you care about loot, then why do you want autoloot?
Did you ever played classic Diablo? There are actually ppl who like the exitement searching a single ring over a whole map because they heard the signature sound of it's dropping. Yes, that is crazy and not everyones cup of tea, but in classic Diablo it was one of the major exitements for the player base.
I hope that helped to explain, why there are ppl loving to interact with the loot more than others.
GGG, please do not introduce autoloot. Loot fountains are the borderline for me, but please don't spoile me the exitement of collecting my loot myself.
Edit: Fixed some typos.
Player decision mechanism will always exist for items. Autolooting currency is a commont thing in ARPGS. Forex: Gold or Bloodshard in D3.
And they can make a gameplay options to which currencies to autoloot. People can tick the checkboxes that they want to autoloot. This is decision mechanism too.

Checkboxes for currency autoloot would be pretty good. That way people that are decidedly against it don't need to use it and can have their fun hunting down items, and most other people can use it. Everyone can tune it to their likings.
Autopickup for non-currency would be a mistake; not sure how it would even be meaningfully implemented.

You say the option for people to have autopickup currency is a solution, but your not seeing the flaw in the actual fact that if it was implemented it would have negative consequences.

Yes, I know these, but there is no currency in PoE. Nobody would have called scrolls in D2 currency until PoE introduced ' currency items'. Even scrolls are items. Therefore comparing it with any currency in any other ARPGs is beside the point.
Actually, Azurite and Sulphite are the first things that are close to something like currency. This is a change of the paradigm being a currency free game. Hear, hear... PoE introduces currency...

Do Azurite or Sulphite take up space in the character's inventory? No? Then them being on autoloot is great.
Anything that does take up space in the inventory should not be autolootable.

Or make it optional. That way you can have it your way and those that disagree with your way can have it theirs. No need to limit to one sides opinion.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Again, do you not understand how if it becomes an option it becomes the only option?
Just stop being lazy and pickup your currency.

Nobody's ever really explained how slightly decreasing the amount of time it takes to pick something up has a real negative consequence outside of people who want to actually click on it.

I pulled the optional idea myself on other things too, but optional is only there is a choice, if both options have something to offer.
In this case it is the choice between free autoloot and clicking myself. Yes, I like to like loot but I am not a masichist who would not use autoloot options, if they are available to anyone else.
This game is cluttered with sardistic game designs, so I understand that ppl are asking for a relieve but lets start with important thinks making the game feel like a pain in the ass.
How about clean loot table of items that are filtered by litterly every loot filter?
How design party game to be actual fun when using league mechanics, using permanent loot assigment and do content with limited portals?
How about the labyrithm drive a large group of players mad because of its different design?
How about having league content actually tested before being relased?
There are so many things posted in this forum that would make PoE a better game, but ppl ask for autoloot, which is only the lazy answer on how badly loot tables are messed with pointless drops.
TD;DR: Making it optional don't solve the acutal problem. There is loot in the tables which ppl not consider to pick up by manual clicking. Once introduced autoloot will not stop with currency. It will replace collecting loot over time.

what makes a bigger difference is whether it's opt-in or opt-out. Defaults matter. There's no issue one way or another, though, because it's purely preference.
