death penalty too great

The only time I ever get annoyed at the death penalty is when I die from lag. Which is very often these days.

I believe in the philosophy of stiff consequences for player deaths. So does GGG. There was a huge thread created by Chris discussing this early in closed beta, the outcome of which is the current XP loss on death mechanic. It should be noted Chris has mentioned this mechanic is under review and a subject of debate in the office. Given GGG's position on this matter, however, if the mechanic changes at all it's a safe bet it will still be a harsh penalty no matter what form it takes.

Desync... this is a frustrating problem, I agree. One that's magnified when combined with a death penalty. It's also a high priority issue that GGG is working hard to improve and has improved greatly already. As frustrating as it is for now, gameplay mechanics should not be changed because of it.

(In fact stability has improved so much that I rarely experience internet related lag- FPS lag is another issue- and only the occasional mob rubber banding. Actual player desync where my character teleports is rare. Though it does seem this is worse for some players than others- specific skills and play style are also a factor.)

Carebear League (separate league with no death penalties)... this is a viable compromise. Make it easier to respec there and have separate loot as well while you're at it. Just don't mess with Default and HC.

Funny thing is though, once desync is under control having no XP loss on death won't make progressing much easier. Your character will be just as likely to die if it's not sufficiently geared, specc'd, or played strategically. In fact it would probably result in more deaths.

Only things bad about the death penalty is the following:

- 6 player party, rangers spamming Lightning Arrow/Poison Arrow, FPS dies, death couldn't be avoided.
- Teleport and die
- Crash and die

If the game crashed (there will be bugs) than you shouldn't lose XP. It should be possible to code this I mean, if a game crashes it practically means you werent doing anything for the last x seconds while dying.

I cannot play in a party anymore at all due to the huge lag, especially with rangers in the party. Coupled with death penalty it means I lose 10 mins of farming/leveling just because I want to play in a group.

Overall - keep the death penalty but fix the game.

Are you serious? Can't tell, seems like troll posts.

Yes, you can die quickly. However, I have heard that if you try, you can avoid death. Crazy as it may sound, it is possible to go through the game without dieing. This includes dealing with lag/desync.
