In this quest, you are told that to choose differently from the group will result in pvp.

I fully acknowledge that this hits new players hard, especially those who don't pay attention. But, sometimes you learn things the hard way.

Whatever GGG wants to do in regards to the quest is fine with me. I just think the argument that "You didn't know" doesn't really work.

So just say you play HC.

And you completed the game up till act 2.

Maybe even on Cruel or Merciless.

There is NO hint, of any kind, that there is surprise PvP built into "group play" from anything that you experienced up to this point, there is no way to expect it or an alert to look for something like that.

I managed to play several months in CB, and then start again now, without having experienced this myself, if it was not for this thread, I would not even know of this!

There is no way all people read the quest texts in full, though I did as I enjoyed the new voices when they were put in.

And even then I did not notice this possibility, as is does simply not make sense in any way!

This is a tool, built for abuse from the start, to support wannabe gankers and griefers that cant get the job done otherwise. I really wonder what kind of wannabe community I ran into here, as I see how many people actually support their little ganking tool. People here really must be un-creative and weak to need this kind of stuff.

TL:DR

You dare say "read the quest text or die"?!
Seriously?! Even in HC?!

Your argument that this is consensual in any way is absolutely invalid.

And you are either a blind fanboy, a griefer or of substandard intellect to support this!

Seems like a lot of people don't understand Game Design is meant to be improved. You are free to your opinion...

You boldly assume, no you claim, that everyone knows of that, or expects team-PvE to suddenly switch to PvP.

I assume someone with enough cognitive ability to reach Act 2 on hardcore will also be literate enough to read what the two big buttons entail, and possibly cautious enough to ponder for a second on what "Help Oak" means, and if it might conflict with fellow players electing to "Kill Oak", and how such a conflict might be resolved. You know, that they might notice the special interface elements and consider taking a brief moment to read the special text box rather than going full ADHD and clicking KILL like an impatient murderhead who has yet to learn that rushing some things can lead to a swift death.

So it is the fault of the player if a 5-man party decides to swiftly go from "kill" to "help" ?
The game gives the player the ability to change the option by simply leaving the area and coming back. It is very easily done and unaware players may be falling into a trap.

PVP should be consentual so that both players will perform their best and on equal terms. 1v5 isn't exactly fair nor fun to begin with.

If this is the intended cut-throat gameplay GGG was looking for, then why the fuck can't I kill you when I join any party to begin with?

If you're going to make this one silly sidequest initiate an unfair PVP activity, then why not just allow us to kill each other after the quest is over?

Either way I would look at it as poor game design to not communicate (in other ways than story text) that your character would initiate a PVP battle. A confirmation button would be a proper fix, and there are many more possible options for GGG to handle this situation.

Let's not have everyone afraid to click "Kill Oak" in an effort to be the last one to pick "Kill Oak" just to be careful of any shenanigans.

They should just allow you to attack party members all the time.
Implement /players x already
I refrain from quoting useless comments this time.
I did not ran into this trap, as I said, this thread is the first time I've heard of it, not that anyone who flames me would care or read anyways.

1.) The game is PvE only if you just progress.
2.) The game is PvE only if you do this in groups.
3.) Most players dont read all the quest texts as they are not important.
4.) Having done the quest solo adds to the general un-awareness.

There is no reason, especially not in HC, to justify the way it works.

It is a lowly griefing tool for uncreative and weak wannabe griefers.

This would actually be a good thing in this context! :D

It's not quest/storytext or dialogue. It's a special textbox that last I checked was different to any other UI element in the game. To be perfectly honest I don't think a confirmation button is going to give pause to anyone who ignores the blatantly different UI that comes up for this quest and just clicks through thoughtlessly. Unless that button says "Resurrect".

Or we could not join public groups for this quest on Hardcore. That might be a bit hard for people who rely on strangers to carry them through most of the game but it can be a learning experience for them. It'll also remove all their FFA loot woes!

1. don't insult other players or moderators, nobody is insulting you and it just makes you look childish.
2. you are alerted of the pvp combat prior to the start of the combat. So there isn't a need for a "hint" - it explicitly tells you.
3. if you cannot conduct yourself in a civil manner, don't post on the forums.

It isn't a tool build to grief players, its an interesting game mechanic that forces players to actually pay attention to what is happening around them.

I replied earlier in this thread with some suggestions of how to make the notification of pvp combat even clearer.

*edit*

ps. asserting that someone is something, doesn't make them that thing. Seems to be a common misconception on the internet that you can just call someone a "fanboy" or a "carebear" or whatever ad hominem attack you want to hurl - and that suddenly the comments of your interlocutor are no longer valid - this isn't true. Calling someone names is something children do.

If you are not open to reasoning, don't post on the forums!

It does matter if it tells you in the quest text, about as much as anything stated in the EULA of any product.

You really try very hard to ignore it, but it simply is not obvious.
Especially as it is unexpected due to the game experience up to this point.
