There's a difference between suspension of disbelief and blatant stupidity.

There also seems to be a pretty big difference of opinion between what's considered "blatant stupidity."

This sounds like a fun and nontraditional way to play the game. The option should exist for those who want to experiment with it, because that IS the nature of the game.

No. The problem lies within the bad idea. Dual shields is a bad idea.
