It's not just a physical thing or a fear of being shittalk'd back. The human voice and the human form force reduce the effort it takes to "put yourself in their shoes" and be empathetic. Sociopaths (read: people that cannot or do not experience empathy, for various reasons) are of course immune from this and will still make up a decent, smallish percentage of the population. But whatever, that's what at least a little thick skin is useful for. |
