Naming and shaming in game....

The entire Policy against naming and shaming is utterly flawed.

We are a community of gamers and we have deep values of protecting game play. Groups and clicks form together and their is a very strong social dynamic that is always at work. What happens to the community then when we don't have the ability to call people out on their poor behavior? Wait your going to tell me we should report people instead of Name and Shame them? Reporting does not do anything when its for RMT, Botting, or Scamming. Reporting works if someones "Feelings" were hurt and thats it.

As long as you don't communicate to other the public, you can get away with everything. If someone attempts to call another out on poor behavior, the one who gets punished isnt the one breaking the game... but the person trying to save the game. This is so counter productive its utterly sickening.

If reporting actually DID something you wouldn't have people WANTING to name and shame.

Hell this is just like the US sentencing people to jail for being whistle blowers. GGG, are you like the US? Going to punish the whistle blowers? If you dont want to be seen like that then make sure you step up your game when people are reporting RMT, Botting or scamming. Otherwise go away and stop restricting the community from trying to DO YOUR JOBS!

*ahem*

Scamming is allowed. You can't name or shame for it, though. As for name and shame in forums, do you know how much flames can burst from that? It's quite a lot, I can tell you.

PS!
Scamming is just social engineering. You can't tell someone to play as you like. As long as the rules say it's fine, then it's fine.

Leeching is also technically allowed so all you 820 people need to get over it and stop naming and shaming, at least until it isnt a violation of the ToS.

The reason we don't allow naming and shaming is because there's a risk innocent players will be targeted, it's not because we want to protect people doing bad stuff.

I still have some questions though.

1. Those who use global 820 for sharing would obviously never report one of their own for naming and shaming because it benefits them to be able to do so while those who dont have any interest in 820 but dont agree with naming and shaming are unlikely to be in there to report it to begin with. Are players expected to perform a certain level of community service within the game in order for those breaking the ToS receive the correct punishment?

2. Isnt there somebody watching chat logs and other such things for moderation purposs?

As a brief explanation, our moderators use a website tool which gives them a live feed of player reports. This tool provides them with the reported text and surrounding conversation, as well as the reason the text was reported. From there the moderators assess what was said and the context it was said in, and contact the player to discuss the issue. For serious misconduct they mute or lock the player's account.

1. We don't expect players to devote time reporting other players, but we do certainly appreciate any reports people choose to make. Our system does rely heavily on players reporting issues as they see them.

2. Unfortunately we don't have the resources to read all chat logs, as they are truly monumental and that would require us hiring a LOT more support staff dedicated to this purpose. We feel the report system is the best use of funds in order to provide decent moderation.

Thanks Samantha.

I think I have found a new mini game in PoE, I might just start playing again.
Have you guys ever heard the story about a guy who lived in a small town his entire life, bullying the people of his community all the time but nobody could do anything about it because bullying isnt technically illegal unless it causes actual harm, so one day, in broad daylight, right on main street, in front of dozens of witnesses, somebody murdered this person. But, because everyone was so relieved that that bully was finally dead, nobody would testify as to who the murderer was, effectively allowing somebody to be murdered just because the community didnt like this guys behavior.?

I know, I know, this example is on the most extreme end of this scale while the situation in game is on the polar opposite side of the scale. But still my point still stands. What is happening in 820 is extremely similar to the above situation in which a community allows people to break the rules and doesnt make the perpetrator of the offense face any consequences, solely because the rest of the community doesnt like somebodies behavior.
I get the feeling that you might be taking life a little too seriously :)

But, hey, Samantha has done an awesome job of answering your query. Why don't we lock this topic and move on with our lives?

No, actually this is kind of fun and entertaining for me. I like to challenge peoples viewpoints and to make them think a little is all. I dont know why but for my entire life i have always felt this need to go against the grain and shake things up a bit by questioning the norm.
Sometimes hacker groups attack online plataforms as a statement,a way to show the people that they are not doing what they should to protect their customers information.
Commonly, flaws in the system are exploited.

Well, we'd all like to think that their motivations are good, that they are led by this ideal... but, more often than not, they are just little shits.
Oblivious

Thanks for clarifying it later, because right here you have said that defending against a criminal in any way is a crime.

I dunno if I like that policy. You arent allowing people to form their own repuations in game if you disallow players from pointing out bad seeds to each other. The 820 Community is only there to help each other out and if someone comes in and tries to take advantage of that, and you dont allow them to police it themselves, then you need to start policing it for them. I doubt GGG wants that responsibility.
