Is Vagan getting ridiculous now??
@Quixote77, I like your way of thinking.
your claim, that fighting Vagan levels 1 through almost-6, solo, with various character builds, in anything from what I think was A1N Prisoner's Gate to level 74-75 maps - is not enough to understand Vagan's mechanics, establish a solid opinion about them, or accurately predict what a level 7, high-map Vagan is/can be. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- @all before Quixote77, when I was a "newbie" in Open Beta, with about half a year and less than 1000 hours playing the game, a friend who quit offered me his Shavronne's Wrappings. free. a.k.a "Legacy Shavs" by today's terms. a.k.a the difference between theoretical filthy-rich John Keys who doesn't need to worry about gearing his characters from that point on, and actual present-day mostly-self-found dirt-poor John Keys, who repeatedly gets screwed and fed bread crumbs by RNG, then forced to trade what few orbs he has, for the semi-garbage gear that keeps his characters going. I declined his offer. my bravest decision in 2 years ~2k hours playing Path Of Exile, or my dumbest one. depending how you look at it. I did so, because back then I was still naive/dumb enough to believe, if I kill something ass-kickingly crazy enough times - a Shavs would actually drop for me. thinking the game has risk/reward. thinking I can actually EARN good loot in this game. fast-forward ~1.5 years and ~1k playing-time to present day, I may just consider building a fucking time machine to go back in time, and smack my newbie self across the face, forcing him to reply "yes" to that PM from Bill... but yeah, it's entirely possible to have a Shavs and/or other top-tier gear, without yet knowing much about actual outside-trade game mechanics. a thousand ways. one of which I ranted about, above. RMT being one as well, sure - but that makes 999 ways to get it without RMT, while still not having enough in-game knowledge and experience to set-up a well optimized build with good gem links. yet all it takes for you guys to immediately jump to stupid conclusions, is the OP mistakenly writing "Cruel" instead of "Merciless". nice going. " You most definitely can, but that's not what I'm saying is it? You can predict, sure, given your experience with him throughout the game all the way from the beginning of Act 1, but can you back the OP, firmly, in his assertion that Vagan at level 7 is ridiculous (note he didn't mention high maps and it seems to be just daily mission level 7 Vagan as he does mention dismissing him), without having experienced Vagan at that level yourself? Or do you too find Vagan 'ridiculously' hard at the level you got him. (What's your win-loss percentage with Vagan at level 5 like? With which builds and gear?) OP is saying level 7 (and likely only daily mission, not high maps/mods) Vagan is -- once again, for emphasis -- ridiculous. What I'm saying is that the l2p comments, the more constructively made ones that is, are actually helpful here, because regardless of how he obtained his Shavs, the fact of the matter is, he has a 6l Shavs and 20/20 gems at his disposal. A daily mission level 7 Vagan shouldn't be a ridiculous encounter. Not all the time at least. Whether you feel his design is boring, boolean or a pure DPS-check (which I largely concur with btw), do you not agree that Vagan in various incarnations under different mods is tougher for certain builds, and at level 7, the penultimate level, he should be suitably hard. You don't seem to want to address the OP's build (which we have yet to see) and poor use of skill gems, as if it isn't central to his original issue of finding Vagan overly hard at level 7. Unless you're saying it isn't important, that he shouldn't learn to optimize the use of his gems and skills, that saying, ad nauseum, Vagan is a boolean DPS-check is in any way, constructive to this thread without offering a discussion of skills and gear, as others have done. If so, I like your way of thinking ;) Last edited by Quixote77#2013 on Dec 2, 2014, 3:33:30 AM

Disclaimer: this post is not meant as a personal attack, just pointing out logic, and how Occam's razor fails in this case.
" " " In this thread the hypothesis with the least assumptions is very simply that where OP's words are taken at face value -- i.e. he did mean to write Cruel instead of Merciless. Which is obviously impossible, so the hypothesis is invalid, as everyone has noted. Where we go in inferring the source of OP's Shavs then takes the next layer of assumptions raised in this thread, where OP: A) mistakenly wrote Cruel instead of Merciless. B) obtained his gear from trading. C) obtained his gear from That Which Shall Not Be Named. All three hypotheses are actually made with one additional assumption, so using Occam's razor, they are equivalent and none should be discarded. What is treated as "common sense" by parties wishing to put forward a particular hypothesis is irrelevant in logic, because common sense is variable depending on environment. Alright, I had said that I would no longer be responding to this post, but I must retort that I did mean farming DOM on Merc difficulty to get my chest, not cruel....
Me and my guild-mates ran through DOM merc a few different times, and Shavs dropped during one of them, and I managed to grab it before it disappeared. I did NOT purposely try to lie about how I obtained my gear at all, you people just assumed that for whatever reason, nevertheless I AM done with this discussion now, so have FUN!! |

Ive never seen a shavs. A 6l shavs has a probability for me right up there with getting eaten by a shark in lake Michigan. To see it used like this makes me cry.

"Not only did he 'drop' a legacy shavs (became legacy in 1.0.0), he claims it dropped from a Dominus run with guild mates, both of which were added at the same time that Shav's went legacy. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. I really did. But there is no way he got that item legitimately. It couldn't have dropped from Dom in Merciless any more than it could have dropped from Dom in Cruel. His story is just not true. Guild Leader The Amazon Basin <BASIN>

" WHAT IS IT WITH THIS MONEY THING?? I already explained that the chest dropped off of Dominus in Merciless, and I lucked out with the links. THERE WAS NO MONEY SPENT, just dumb luck.... As for the poster who claims this is impossible because it is a legacy item, I beg to differ, my story just IS true, and I know you are just jumping on the bandwagon to attack me, and my posts. I hope you got some merit points with the other kids!! |

ALRIGHT FINE....
If it will make any of you feel better, I bought the shavz from a friend for 30ex last year sometime, a great deal, and it was not a drop. I did however manage to 6L it myself as it only had 2 sockets when I got it. Not that how I obtained my gear has any bearing whatsoever on my posts, because I only posted it here because I was accused in another post of being undergeared, which I am NOT. As for being unable to take criticisms, this is also not true, but mostly what I have been hearing here was not realistic changes, albeit I have changed out my Reduced Mana gem in my main attack with Melee Physical Damage, which has pumped my attack up somewhat to be honest, thank you Quixote77. I am not adverse to criticism if it is helpful, and I can actually do it, but believe it or not, there are not a TON of available builds starting from the Shadow tree, and I have done my best to optimize what is there, but I am still lacking some survivability truly, and I cannot pure DPS my way through it within a time limit like I should be able to. The new patch has dropped, and I will be doing a full respec tomorrow, but after looking at the new tree, I do not see many options I have not already chosen to be a melee shadow besides making a boring dagger build. You will notice that I did not gem these yet, because I am sick to death of being attacked about my gem set ups, but again this is boring to me, being a dagger melee toon, so I am will likely avoid going the dagger route even though it may well hit harder. I like my axe , or I could go with bows and be ranged(meh). Still, your diligence paid off guys, I lied about how I got my chest, GRATZ, you win the internets.... However that does nothing to address the question of Vagan being almost Godlike once he reaches level 7, and I stick to that statement!! Also, I would like to thank johnKeys & Quixote77 for making an attempt to not feed the trolls in this discussion, nice guys!! Last edited by cortni#3620 on Dec 13, 2014, 5:18:51 AM
