but even if you're not, and even if the words "Dungeon Master" don't ring epically in your head, sending shivers of nostalgia down your spine, like they do for me - I think you should try Legend Of Grimrock.
both of them, and the 2nd especially.
it's so good it's just hard to describe really.

and if my toaster can handle it, yours can for sure.

The only first person dungeon crawlers I've played are Shin Megami Tensei (not Nocturne), Etrian Odyssey and Dark Spire, so I guess young people have access to the same genres, just less punishing overall.

PS: I'm 23, but don't you dare see me as young. I'm almost an engineer, ;)

Dunno, great game (didn't play the 2nd one yet) but the mambo dancing combat gets old quick.

well Grimrock 2 is a lot more about puzzles, D&D mechanics, and pure brain power, than it is about combat IMO.
that, and an absolutely massive world with so many places to explore.

and regarding combat well... it's harder than in Grimrock 1. harder, because if you are just dancing around without knowing what you are doing or having a plan - you WILL die.
they just improved every single aspect of the game, into a real masterpiece.
LoG 1 was a good game.
LoG 2 is going to make you say "wow" multiple times over.

though it can get a bit frustrating at times, because too many puzzles don't have sufficient hints.
trial and error is a way to play too, I suppose.

Shadow: That was fun

I wanted to play that game but ended playing Etrian Odyssey first.

Well, I'll try it some day I don't feel enfeebled.

Sounds great, I'll put it on my list. Tyvm. :)
Definetely play Baldur's Gate 2 if you have not. I agree that Planescape for me is propably the greatest game ever made. Otherwise if you want really strong story(plot) try the witcher or the witcher 2. They do not have the philosophical aspect of PS but the world is very "grey" and the story is highly complex and political. Your choices affect the game more than any other that i have ever tried.

There is also Dark Souls, which is famous for it's combat, and does not have much of straightforward plot, BUT it is amazing to try figure out the history and the lore of the world that you play through dialogues and item desciptions. It is very cryptic, and almost avant garde like.

Considered. But...potato machine. And I don't know how good the version for PC is.

Potato machine? Well, I managed to run Fallout 1 and 2 very smoothly on a Thinkpad, so yours should have no problem. Never played Planescape, but I hear good things about it and the system requirements are very reasonable.

PS!
You'll want to play FO 1 and then 2. Otherwise, you'll end up losing interest on the first.

Yeah, it's fucking time.

About Torment: everything is magnificent except the combat and whatever is outside of Sigil and the final level.

If you liked Torment id recommend all of the Black Isle Studios cRPGs, or even Troika's.
Word to the wise though, get a resolution mod.

BIS
-Fallout 1,2 & Tactics
-Icewind Dale 1 & 2
-Lionheart Legacy of the Crusader

TROIKA
-Arcanum
-Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
-Temple of Elemental Evil

If you're in for more modern(and slightly more expensive) cRPGs id def check out Divinity: Original Sin and/or Wasteland 2, both do a great job of capturing that hardcore old school RPG feel while adding new mechanics and fresh ideas to the old formula.

For ARPGs obv D1,2. If you haven't played those yet i'm genuinely curious how you got here in the first place.

Upcoming RPGs to get excited about? Pillars of Eternity, Obsidian's new one, or ...brace yourselves BALDURS GATE 3, apparently in development since 2012 by Overhaul Games ( they have already remastered BG1 and 2 as well as Icewind Dale in HD )

"
Rumors on the development of The Black Hound continued up until 2012 upon the announcement of Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. The developers, Overhaul Games, revealed that they planned on making Baldur's Gate III, but did not initially reveal whether it would be a continuation of The Black Hound. Overhaul Games would later clarify that a possible Baldur's Gate III would not be based on The Black Hound and instead be an original story.[
