I need help to choose a RPG to play, folks.

The BG-EE devs want to make a BG3, didn't get permission (yet?) though.

If you liked Torment id recommend all of the Black Isle Studios cRPGs, or even Troika's.
Word to the wise though, get a resolution mod.

BIS
-Fallout 1,2 & Tactics
-Icewind Dale 1 & 2
-Lionheart Legacy of the Crusader

TROIKA
-Arcanum
-Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
-Temple of Elemental Evil

If you're in for more modern(and slightly more expensive) cRPGs id def check out Divinity: Original Sin and/or Wasteland 2, both do a great job of capturing that hardcore old school RPG feel while adding new mechanics and fresh ideas to the old formula.

For ARPGs obv D1,2. If you haven't played those yet i'm genuinely curious how you got here in the first place.

Upcoming RPGs to get excited about? Pillars of Eternity, Obsidian's new one, or ...brace yourselves BALDURS GATE 3, apparently in development since 2012 by Overhaul Games ( they have already remastered BG1 and 2 as well as Icewind Dale in HD )

Rumors on the development of The Black Hound continued up until 2012 upon the announcement of Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. The developers, Overhaul Games, revealed that they planned on making Baldur's Gate III, but did not initially reveal whether it would be a continuation of The Black Hound. Overhaul Games would later clarify that a possible Baldur's Gate III would not be based on The Black Hound and instead be an original story.[

No Torment: Tides of Numenera mention? Blasphemy.

Definetely play Baldur's Gate 2 if you have not. I agree that Planescape for me is propably the greatest game ever made. Otherwise if you want really strong story(plot) try the witcher or the witcher 2. They do not have the philosophical aspect of PS but the world is very "grey" and the story is highly complex and political. Your choices affect the game more than any other that i have ever tried.

There is also Dark Souls, which is famous for it's combat, and does not have much of straightforward plot, BUT it is amazing to try figure out the history and the lore of the world that you play through dialogues and item desciptions. It is very cryptic, and almost avant garde like.

Considered. But...potato machine. And I don't know how good the version for PC is.

The Witcher is a PC game, but with a potato machine, you might face problems. Dark Souls 2 is fine on PC, the first one is borderline unplayble. But from your list, definetely play baldour's gate 2.

Numenera's Torment is still more than a year away and I figured you already knew about it since, you know, Torment is amongst your fav games :p

but fuck yeah, I cant wait for it too

No one here has played Atlus games?

A lot of people nowadays take western rpgs and Dark Souls, and that's it. The folks at Atlus, even if using the dated format many JRPGs have, have created a lot of innovative things that even WRPGs could learn about.

Although I know some, never played Atlus games. Also, Dark Souls is the Nicholas Cage of games; it's so bad that it's good. Could you recommend me some of their games? Can't pick one easily; games are crazy expensive here. More or less, a dinner at the best restaurant of the city costs the same amount as an average videogame.

PS!
Not that we get much variety, either. It's either Steam, Origin or play the "11/10 IGN" games.

Can you please elaborate on that one? As to what Nero said, it is a matter of taste. I never likes Zelda or Final Fantasy, so basically i never bothered with JRPGs too much. I have played most of the good western ones though. Dark Souls i loved because it was in it's core a western PG title(that's the developer's word), that was developed in Japan, so it was weird :D Also the Wticher is an eastern europe RPG, heh, and for me personally it is the best of it's generation. Recent western RPGs, like dragon age, Fallout new vegas, skyrim, king;s of Amalur do not come close to it(IMO).

The Witcher and Dark Souls(2), are the 2 games that basically renewd my interest in RPGs. I though most of the recent titles were always recycling older games, usually making them worse.

Well, it depends on what you want.

The archetypical hardcore game for Atlus is Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. That game plays like your typical JRPG, the thing is that you'll have to speak a lot to your enemies (you make your party from enemies in the game), the game requires a decent quantity of strategy, and there is a deep system to fuse enemies. And there is a hidden alignment system. I like to call this game the Planescape: Torment of JRPGs, although it's not story focused at all (the little there is, it's gold, specially if you know about SMT: I and II).

In the same vein, SMT: Strange Journey and SMT: IV, although SMT: Nocturne is still at the top.

If you want story, Digital Devil Saga. Although I can't really recommend it, because of the repetitive gameplay. But the story in this game is the best for RPGs at that generation. Some people like Persona 3 and 4 better, the thing is that it is a lot like an anime; it has strong characterization but a poor story arc.

If you want an aRPG, Devil Summoner, I guess.

If you want to be punished, Etrian Odyssey. It's sickeningly cutesy for a brutal game. Something like that should be grim dark, :P

PS: This is a speech made by YHVH, the judeochristian God, in the Chaos path (a.k.a.: I want absolute freedom to do everything I want, so I choose Lucifer) in SMT II:

I doubt anyone will play those games, but they are controversial as fuck.

And here is Dante in Nocturne, when he was cool:

Arx Fatalis.

The spellcasting system is a turn-off for some, but it was pretty good for its time. I still re-install it every once in a while

Loved the goblins in that game.
Oblivious
