Evasion and non-avoidable phys damage abilities
Seriously. The topic thread says it all.
Certain abilities are probably balanced against either armor (damage reduction) or ES (very high numbers, recovering itself). When you are hit by abilities that cant be avoided, Evasion gets the worst of two worlds: you have life instead of ES and you dont have damage reduction. I just had Zana open me a lvl 72 dungeon with two main bosses. What can I say? Jailer has that ability with spikes hitting you from below. I dont think my evasion (62% + 40% dodge) worked even once, so I assume it cant be dodged. Same with one of the rogue exiles, he uses a ground slam with a huge AOE, also hitting automatically (or os it seems). Such encounters are very rare, usually evasion (while interior as most players agree) does the trick just fine. For an archer, at least. But unavoidable abilities with huge physical damage make evasion fail big time, as a concept. AFAIK Diablo is getting rid of evasion. I'd hate PoE to do the same, but leaving it 'as is' is also a bad idea. Evasion needs some fix, I think. At least regarding these AOE physical abilities you cant avoid. Evasion isn't supposed to be armor rating with another flavor. it's a different defense mechanic in itself. It is superior to armor vs attack in many ways, notably by reducing elemental damage on attacks as well as having a keystone that trivializes ranged attacks. If you want to have defense against unavoidable physical damage tehre are many alternatives - MoM, Endurance Charges, Spell Block, Lightning Coil, Spell Dodge... You're supposed to stack multiple defenses, not rely on one.

I was just playing my new melee shadow ghost reaver, thought giving eva+es a chance, and the same stuff came to my mind: evasion is simply too weak.
Especially when fighting bosses or tough demon spawns in beyond, the fights last too long and you will get hit, and then you die in 2 hits. The only way to avoid this is to break off with mobility, whirling blades or leap away, allow the monster hit/evasion chance to reset while flasks heal you up. Why bother wasting so much time in fights when you could simply go full armor/armor+es and tank the shit out of everything with steady dps/life leech/lgoh? Evasion is simply the least attractive option. You have to take every possible evasion buff node and get the highest 100%+eva bonus gear to reach at least 60-70% total evasion chance to make it okay. And doing so you sacrifice every dmg node. Not attractive at all. I got 10% life leech, 1k phys dps with a epic leveling hammer and I'm having the most stress ever leveling this shadow. Every hit I take from a spawned demon hurts like fuck, almost 50% of my 1500 life pool gone, and they hit me often. One slight misspositioning, tiny desync, and I'm balls against the wall... I'm back to armor for now 'cos eva simply sucks. "Im smartest. Your stoped. Dael wiht it."

phys dmg is just fking retarded i just died in literally less than 1 second to a cyclone that just casually span over me with 6k HP and a lightning coil backed up by over 80 res.
just. a. joke. there have been times i've died with coil, aa, and over 4k hp, to SINGLE hits. this is on semi low level maps. like how is that ok? how is that justifiable. Last edited by Maximus_X#5188 on Sep 11, 2014, 4:16:10 AM

Evasion/Acrobatics is fine.
You just have to adapt to it: Perpetual Granite Flask Mind over matter (for mana heavy builds) Lightning Coil etc... I dont see people complaining about how OP it is vs ranged projectiles (with ondars) The only issue I can see is devourers, where you simply cannot react. But then again big life pool with leveled CwdT with end.cry and IC does the job. |

In my experience, Devourers are easy with Evasion/Dodge. It is that Rogue Exile who uses Bear Trap and EK Totems that makes a mess of you. Oh, I lost the ability to kite... and the guy uses the one ability I can only defend against by kiting... crap :(

" Please. Did you read the post? I went evasion/acrobatics this time, and yes it's fine for an archer. With my 4-link gear I am farming lvl75 maps and I feel fine. Most of the time. (For a melee I think it's still not fine, you are going to be insta-killed every now and then.) The problem is with abilities that cant be avoided and deal insane amounts of damage because they are balanced vs armor. One possible solution is to make evasion-based characters 'partially' avoid it. In other words, WHEN PHYSICAL DAMAGE CAN NOT BE AVOIDED, EVASION WORKS AS ARMOR. Maybe at half strength. Say, 60% evasion chance grants you 30% damage reduction against physically damaging spells. Last edited by Shudoyama#4156 on Sep 11, 2014, 5:45:45 AM

I agree with the OP.
Either we don't have a way to fully ignore evasion for the normal type damage OR we have 100% armor ignored as well to even out. We also need to have 100% ignore block ablities and 100% ignore fire resist etc... This all or nothing stuff is just OP, including the marauder keystone. |
