The only limitation on where you can place your gems is the socket color. As long as the color of the socket and the gem match, you can place your gem in any piece of equipment.

You can socket as many skill gems as you have sockets. Of course you can only have a maximum of 8 skills assigned to a hotkey but you can change those hotkey assignments whenever you want.

Open beta will be coming soon, the release is free to play... and you don't run the risk of getting burned out playing the game before it's finished and polished.

Not that it will make you feel any better, but it's a thought.
