Work okay on Surface Pro 2?
2 simple rules when it comes to gaming.
1) Nothing portable 2) Nothing apple "just for try, for see and for know"

This thread has some of the most ill-informed posts I've ever read.
Any modern laptop with a dedicated GPU can play modern games perfectly fine. They may run hot, and spin their fan loudly, but they'll do it. No tablet has a GPU, so whatever one you choose, you won't be running any modern game at high graphics settings. Angry birds is your preferred choice here, or any game specifically written for mobile devices. As for the usefulness of tablets, my God, can you people pull your heads out of your backsides, tablets are the future of the industry, you forget the vast majority of PC's in the world are used in corporations, that's where your tablets are going to become dominant. Staff will connect wirelessly and run a VDI session of their corporate SOE anywhere they roam. *Gets off soapbox IGN: Kulde

Keep in mind the context of this post.... Tablet... Gaming...
I'm not saying Tablets aren't useful for various tasks.. High-End PC Gaming is not one of them. The same is true for the majority of laptops as well. Laptops aren't built for high-end gaming. They're built for web browsing, image processing, video processing, and general "office" tasks. They have poor form-factor for heat dissipation, so anything that generates a lot of work and heats up the components is bad long-term. You'll cook your laptop. I also have a personal beef with companies that try to market/manufacture "Gaming" laptops as a marketing gimmick to attempt to get suckers to buy them. There are very few laptops I would actually consider "gaming" laptops for anything other than Hearthstone or Minesweeper. Will games run on them? Most games probably will. But you'll end up cooking the laptop and having a lot more long-term issues with it instead of just using a PC for gaming. Laptops were never intended or designed to be able to run high-end games. Most will work because of the amount of money Game Devs put into their products to get them to run on the utter crap that comes out. PoE is not one of those. PoE is demanding on even the best of PCs. Some call it bad optimization. Others call it lack of budget. Whatever the reason, PoE will not perform nearly as well on laptops. So I personally wouldn't PoE on anything other than a well-cooled desktop.. That's just my personal opinion however. Last edited by Drakier#1520 on Feb 26, 2014, 5:44:37 PM

Sorry for the late response here. Surface Pro 2 owner here.
I was doing a Dockrun incl. Vaal Sidearea to test the perfomance. I got minor slowdowns, but nothing unplayable. FPS was 15 at worst. The average was around 30 without enemys arround me i get 60 FPS. Here is what i get with fraps: 2014-08-10 15:23:06 - PathOfExileSteam Frames: 3090 - Time: 100344ms - Avg: 30.794 - Min: 15 - Max: 49 Settings where of course all lowed down to the maximum amount. The resolution was 1366x768. I expected far worse and rly considering worser performance. However if requested, i will plug in my Surface tonight on a bigger monitor and farm several hours. PS: Plz stay away from juding the device, only it isnt primary for gaming. The Surface line is amazing and the fact that you can play you steam library on this 10 inc tablet is stunning. Well to be honest the choice is easy:
1) You want to use your PC only at home and at one desk -> desktop pc 2) You want to use your PC at certain desks which have a power connector -> (gaming/bulky)-notebook 3) You want to use your PC in many at and be mobile with it -> ultra book or laptop-tablet-hyrid I would never ask on a gaming side for a PC requirment, but if your usecase is 3) I can tell you, that you only can get something with a cpu-integrated graphic cards, which cant compete with the usual AMD or nVidia stuff. But please only buy a gaming laptop (with such a graphic card in it), when you want to move thatz thing arround. Otherwise: Get a desktop PC! |

I am pretty late, just in case someone should have a similar question in the future:
I own a Surface Pro 2, and PoE runs smooth on it. No issues at all. Just set shadows and details to low, and it will run with the native screen resolution. In general about the Surface pro 2: I understand the argument that this piece of hardware is not the perfect one for any single use (like gaming (no GPU) / office work (small screen) / typical tablet-use (heavier and more bulky then pure tablets), just to name some examples. The big advantage is the versatility. You can do everything with it, everywhere, with carrying only a minimum of weight. Playing your steam libary games, working with office tools, and even draw directly on the screen with a pressure-sensitive pen, for example. Most likely you won't find any other computer with such a versatility, at least not at the moment. :) |
