How does one transition from 5link to 6link?
Pick up high i lvl base 73+, 6 socket item , fuse, chaos till mad, trans, aug, regal ... now wait till can afford et + ex. Or something like that

Craft a 5L, and resign yourself to never seeing a 6L.
Thats what I did. |

Get a few ex from flipping items in trade, then get lucky and find someone selling a poorly-rolled 6L for peanuts. Chaos it until you get something decent, or trade your new 6L for one with your defensive stats of choice and chaos THAT until you get something decent.

I find it absolutely demoralizing and absurd that you can drop lower than your current links, if you get a 5 link it should stay 5 linked seeing as how important links are for anything in this game. Such poor design decisions to be honest.

While using a 5L, buy i74+ chest piece for a couple chaos a pop. 6socket it and try to 6L using armor scraps. If you get 5L, sell it for an exalt or so and buy a new white i74 and try again. Sell the exalt for fusings/scraps. Repeat until you get a 6L. Then just chaos spam the chest for a good roll.
both of these aquired using this method;

" eternal 5L, spend all currency to roll a 6L, if no 6L, use eternal to get back the 5L. if yes 6L, sell imprint for a regret and gz. on topic. not sure what is the correct way. I myself bought relatively cheap first 6L, used it till I got enough currency to buy a crafting 4 mod 6L project, got 2 more solid rolls by et/ex and now I have total cost was 30 ex for 6L and 22 ex in et/ex for two additional mods 2nd 6L was totally crafted by me from the alt stage, also jewled and fused it myself. result: Spent 180 ex in total for all. So I can't recommend this method if you do not have a hefty amount of orbs. Also I would rather have a well rolled 5L than a shit-mid rolled 6L. 6L is not necessary, but if you want to make a good transition save up to 50 ex, and buy a decent 6L chest. Buying a white lvl 50-55 chest for 5-10 ex and rolling chaos will most likely end you up with an armor that is a lot worse than a 5L counterpart you can buy for 10-15 ex. items shop: 364086 ign: [ICU]missuse if you like to HLD, add me inactive in game atm, PM me if you need something. As suggested, use 5link and fuse a 6 socket one, never know what happens :)
Was lucky and linked Eternal exalting only if the base item is really really good, otherwise better to use a medium 5link and spamming fuses on a 6socket hoping to link it. Currently im crafting/using but might chicken out on 6linking them :p |

Best chance to 6-link yourself ?
Use a 6-socket item, aim for a 5-link and hope that you'll get a 6-link first. It happened to me once with a chest. Letting go a 5-link to hope for a 6-link on the same item is guaranteed frustration. Unless you go for the scam lottery... |

Saved up 1.5k fusings and spammed them on my current chest. 963 fusings later and boom 6l! Sure it isn't the best but there was nothing on the market except mirror worthy gear for my build so I didn't have many options with wealth constraint. Really happy with it :) On a side note I got a 5 link TWELVE times while trying to 6l this item...that is a 5l every 80 fusings. It makes me think I should be saving every decently rolled rare chest I find and 5 link it for big profit... Keep PoE2 Difficult.
