My computer started crashing only while playing POE

Update:

Ok, I found a temporary solution. I got confirmation from GGG that it is a problem with certain soundblaster sound cards, and although I wasn't able to fix the actual problem, I got around it by using a USB output for my audio when playing Path of Exile instead of the soundblaster output.

So, it isn't really a fix, but it works for now and I just spent an hour without a single crash.
Good workaround
I have the black-screen-powers-off-then-reboots-itself symptom too.

For me it only happens during full/near-full groups during graphically energetic moments. It is not certain to happen, but happens often enough to be a significant deterrent to grouping up. The machine is not overheating: the GFX is typically around 70 degrees Celsius when it dies and the fans haven't even left their minimum speed. The machine is a 3-month old Alienware desktop. PoE is the only game I'm having any issues with.

Since people have been mentioning sound as a possible issue, mine is "•Realtek High Definition Audio".

No BSOD information (the machine just powers down instantly without a preceding crash).
The only thing in the event log is a critical error that the machine restarted without being shutdown properly first.

I've been getting this since the VAAL patch too. Hard crash to black screen, sound stuck and only way out of it is to reset PC. It occurs in random areas and my temps are all normal. Not sure on how to get a report from my PC, though.

I've been having this issue too

I'm just going along, usually somewhere in Act 3 and suddenly my screen is black and my computer is powered down.
Yesterday I got a new videocard: Geforce 750 GTX. Before that I had a Geforce 9500. Also I have a RealTek (high definition) audio system.

Now with the old videocard, the graphics were poor, but no crashes at all.
With the new videocard, the graphics are awsome, but it crashes real often, to the point of unplayable: My screens turn black/white/half blue and a screaming sound. Then I have to reboot.

Note that the new videocard has a HDMI output with a sound controller build in. So I actually have 2 sound card systems.

From the information above, it seems that more (all?) people have the combination of: Geforce GTX card with RealTek HD audio system.

I did notice that when downgrading the resolution of my screen, it is taking longer before the system crash happens...

Did you just up grade the video card and not the PSU? The GTX 750 takes quite a bit more power than the 9500... so if you didn't upgrade your PSU, it's likely you're not providing enough voltage to the video card.
I'm having issues in the past 24 hours.

It started in group play, lots of spam skills and I noticed freezing and red squares all over my screen, my PC would bring up my desktop and then return to the game.

After this happened about 5 times I started getting kicked out of my game and then after that happened about 3 times I got the BSOD and had to reboot my PC.

I've taken my PC to the the workshop as I had updated my BIOS the past month and I've been having heaps of issues with it reporting voltage errors and even troubled with POSTing.

Anyway when I was looking at the ingame settings I did notice three different options for sound, so I think this is behind the issues we're having. I just hope for some reason I haven't cooked my GPU (GTX 580).

At first I thought of that too... But the power consumption of my previous card (Gforce 9500) was 50 Watt, the new one is 60 Watt. My pc has a 350 Watt power supply and I even disconnected my dvd drive and everything that might drain power, so it's basically a mainboard with a hardrive and videocard atm... 350 Watt should really be enough.
(Please also note that it only happens in PoE, I can do lot of resource demanding other things on my pc, but nothing else crashes ever)

I tried almost everything atm without success (although time till crash seems a bit longer):
- Updated mainboard BIOS
- Tried disabling onboard sound (through BIOS) and only used HDMI sound. Then I tried disabling the HDMI sound (through NVIDIA settings) and only use onboard sound, both crash.
- Starting PoE with the --softwaresound option.
- Lower screen resolution.
- Used the NVIDIA tool to set lower graphics for client.exe (described in another thread here).
- Downgraded graphics settings to the absolute minimal in PoE
- Tried fullscreen windowed vs fullscreen (fullscreen seems to last a bit longer)
- Probably even more

This is really getting frustrating. I am not going to put back my old videocard, I need the HDMI for output to my TV and I did pay a fair amount of money for it. Probably I will go try tonight with the nosound option.

Any other tips/advice would be more than welcome...
If you only have a 350w PSU, then I think that is most likely your problem (but I cannot guarantee it).

Just because it SAYS 60w, doesn't mean that's actually the case. Those cards are pretty beefy and the fans on them are also pretty large (and draw a fair amount of power consistently).

I wouldn't personally go with less than a 500w or 600w (and I use a 750w just to be sure).

It also depends on the quality of the PSU and the voltage/amperage on the rails. In my experience, the cheap lower-end wattage PSUs just can't cut the power rating required (and generally cause undervoltage problems).

As a test, do you happen to have a spare PSU? You don't necessarily need one that is high rated, but if you have a spare PSU, you can plug it into the video card by itself so that the video card is running off a PSU all by itself and then the PSU in your system is running the rest of the components. There are some tricks you need to be able to start the PSU not connected to the motherboard, but you can find those online.
