I really hated that aspect of D2. My stash was full of all sorts of useless runes that never got used but that you couldn't throw away just in case you came across that one super-rare rune you needed. It was a very poorly designed system.

Did we at one stage mention skills split across multiple gems? It's an idea that may make it in.


My impression is that it is sort of like emeralds and rubies in Diablo 2, in that you can use the chips but when they are combined into one gem they are much better.

A skill could need 7 gem 'fragments', that can be combined, and could be used with just one which would be 1/7 of the total power of a gem at that level, i.e. 7/7 would do 49 while 1/7 does just 7. How it would work with fragments of different levels is beyond me...
