Gem sets could have something like that where they get an extra 'unique' bonus, maybe at the expense of less customisation.

Did we at one stage mention skills split across multiple gems? It's an idea that may make it in.

First time I remember hearing anything about it. I'm a little confused as to what it means though.

I agree. I don't really see how this would work.

To me it means a skill that requires more than one socketed gem before you can use it.

That doesn't sound like a very good idea to me.

It's not that much different from the support gem system (assuming I've read it right).

Imagine:
Fireball gives access to fireball.
Frost nova gives access to frost nova.

Fireball + Frost nova in linked sockets gives access to fireball, frost nova, and:

"fire nova" and "frostball"
or
"fireball nova"
or
a fireball that casts a frost nova on hit

etc.

Or maybe it's just a really powerful skill that is balanced by taking up two sockets.

This is a fantastic idea to balance more powerful gem sets, and effectively removes the requirement for 'set' pieces on the gem side... you could still add set pieces for gear itself though (or suffix-prefix mods that link like sets)

I still don't see needing to find and use multiple gems to cast a single skill as being a good idea. You would just end up with a bunch of your inventory full of useless gem set pieces that don't even have any worth on their own. I'd much rather have stricter level/attribute requirements or even a different class of gem that requires a much rarer type of socket to use. Though I don't really think that's a very good idea either, it still certainly beats having a single skill split among multiple gems.

Well they'd need to be useable on their own I think maybe as standard gems. But you know when you think about it you carry runes in your pack or chest in D2 till you can use them.
