Set Items and Class Only

i would like to see smaller sets 2 or 3 items total. or looser bound sets, like 4-5 pieces and any 2 of that set will give you a set bonus but they wont keep piling up as you add more pieces. so you have a hat and some boots from the same set and gain the bonus but adding the other 3 parts does nothing. this way you have many combinations to choose from and better chances to find at least 2 parts early on vs trying to find all 5 before you out grow it.

There could be randomized item mods that link together like sets, that way they would be very versatile and be easier to implement, instead of having to create many pre-determined items

We actually considered exactly this system that Zephyroth suggests here. We don't feel it's necessary yet though (the item system is plenty complicated already), so we're considering it or something similar (or may just real set items) for an expansion.

sounds like a good compromise to me.
Sets have the potential to be devastaing in POE if they regulate it strictly to skill gem sets. Since everyone will be able to use every item, having sets of skill gems would add another element of re-playability. Hypothetically let's say a set of skill gems called "GrimTreaders Set of the Arcane" would grant a set bonus if all gems were found and used in different pieces of equipment at the same time regardless of what other skill or support gems are also socketed. I think it would make "sets" something to consider as end game equipment unlike in D2 where they were considerably underpowered vs runewords, uniques and rares.
I think the randomized approach sounds interesting. That was done in Borderlands and was one of the most popular features.
Yes good sir, I enjoy slaying mythical creatures.

Really? I missed that. Was it an added feature in one of the expansions? Or have I just upped my n00b status?

Randomized sets were not in Borderlands. I think you mean the random manufacturer names then generally indicated what sort of focus the weapon had. Those weren't sets. They didn't give more bonuses when you had more equipped. They were just designed to complement each other.

Sorry meant to say the randomized loot not so much of with the sets. What i meant was that the way they handled the randomization was really good. You could just find some epic weapon that just blew everything else out of the water.

Now i think that this would be really cool in PoE if you could find a set that was just really awesome. Still it shouldn't be the best items you can get otherwise everyone is running around with the same armor.

That's the problem. Set items by themselves are basically just less powerful uniques. Obviously their value goes up when you start getting set bonuses, but how powerful should those bonuses get? Should they be on par with having uniques in those slots? Probably not.

I know some players like sets because they add to the lore of the game, but I think you can accomplish similar results with flavorful uniques. There might be something to having another rarity of item (with a shiny new color) for players to find. But with currency items being as cool and important to the game as they are, I don't know that another rarity of item with set stats would be the way to go.

I like Sacreds self contained sets. You get a weapon and rings, the rings are socketed into the weapon and so the set becomes one item.
Another thing about some of the sets in sacred was they gave unique affixes like procing a spell not normally available or having an effect like Burning bone where it ignores any fire resistences(I think thats what it did).

Gem sets could have something like that where they get an extra 'unique' bonus, maybe at the expense of less customisation.
