The Covenant Pulser

This build use Freezing Pulse as its main skill and the Covenant Robe as a mandatory unique item. For this reason, I call it the Covenant Pulser.

Build Description:

Defense

Spoiler
The Covenant Robe provides blood magic as well as Energy shield. So, at its core, the build is a life + energy shield build. As a side bonus, the build pick up many dexterity and evasion nods (including Ondar's Guile) in the East side of the tree. So, in the end, the character focus on life, energy shield and evasion gear. At level 82, the character has about 2400 life, 3200 energy shield and 4000 evasion.

Evasion allows the character to avoid approximately 37% of melee attacks as well as 75% of all projectiles attack (Thanks to Ondar's Guile).

Life leech linked with the main skill (Freezing Pulse) allows the character to easily heal self-inflicted damage (blood magic) as well as healing up incoming chaos damage. In addition, the passive Heart of the Oak provides 1% life regeneration per second.

The large energy shield pool absorbs most of the damage. When taking damage (including self-inflicted damage), the shield cannot regenerate normally. However, in those situations, the Shavronne revelation ring (4% es regeneration per second) as well as the Voidbringer gloves (20 es per kill) allows the character to keep regenerating, albeit at a slower rate.

Finally, the shield provides 26% chance to block.

Auras

Spoiler
Being a Blood Magic Build, picking up % aura is out of the question. Among the flat mana cost auras, the only useful ones for the build are Discipline and Grace. Both are used and are well worth the life cost.

Offense

Spoiler
The main ability is freezing pulse. Socketed in a 5L Covenant, the support gems are : Faster Casting, Lesser Multiple Projectiles, Life Leech, Increased Critical Strikes and Added Chaos Damage (provided by The Covenant). DPS is around 6000. Using Lesser Multiple Projectiles means you can hit monsters for 3 times the sheet dps, so 18 000 dps.

Having so few auras (2) and a main skill that is both efficient at killing single targets and groups has some advantages. There are lots of available sockets for secondary skills. Here are the one I use :

Flame totem : Supported with Faster casting, Increased Critical Strike and Increased Critical Damage (socketed in the +1 to elemental skills gloves)

Fire Trap : Supported with Concentrated effect and Fire Penetration (socketed in the +1 to fire skills shield)

Arctic Breath Trap : Supported with Fork, Trap and Added Chaos damage.

All tree skills benefits from most of the build's strenght : lots of projectile damage passives, lots of critical chance/dmg passives, lots of +elemental dmg passives.

Curses

Spoiler
Since elements other than cold are used (Fire for the Flame Totem and Fire Traps), Elemental weakness is the preferred offensive curse.

Contest requirements :

Spoiler
fun to play: It is definitively a very fun build to play. Killing speed is fast. The traps and totem provides lots of versatility.

survivable: Very sturdy. Both the Large Health Pool, life leech, high evasion, decent block% and freezing abilities helps survability.

cost-effective: Most expensive pieces of gear are the Shavronne ring (3.5 exalted) and the Voidbringer gloves (3 exalted). Both of these items aren't mandatory though, particularly the gloves. The only mandatory unique is The Covenant 5L and that can be bought for less than 6 gcp. Together, the other pieces of equipment can be bought for less than 4 exalted. So, a total of approximately 11 exalted. But very possible for less than 5. So, giving the survability and fun factor, I'd say its very cost-effective.
Shadow : Covenant Pulser (504561)
Ranger : 12 charges Frenzy Archer (65154), Dual Claws Elemental ST (709126)
Witch : Self-Cast Arc Tanky Witch (770185), AoF EK/Bear trap (863970)
Templar : Frenzy + AB/Fireball "Cast on Crit" Wander (611200)
Marauder : Death Oath Staff User (498864)

Grats Yalani, your build looks very interesting. May try it out one day when I have the chance and gears to make it happen.
Sometimes you can take the game out of the garage but you can't take the garage out of the game.

Great contest, awesome entries!

Using Arc as damage skill + Mines.
Pretty nifty, does it maybe profit of the new uniques?

Will bookmark this thread for inspiration purpose. :P

Basically I was going for a very tanky, high life build. I also later added in the idea of going for max shield block as well. My idea for this build did change a bit as I was going along and I was also trying to allocate some extra passives for the other challenge on the way, so probably could be optimized a bit more. Basically though, from the starting area, head left, grab the life nodes along the way, then head down to blood drinker and blood magic as soon as possible. Then go into the Marauder area for the extra resists and life. Fill in the other life nodes and grab the +int/dex nodes when you need them to use your skills.

After the part I have so far, obviously the next stop is Tetsudo. Some of the other nodes in that area like master of the arena and acceleration are probably worth grabbing as well, then any other shield nodes you can reach(precise interruption/weapon artistry would be good too).

Skills used:
Infernal blow was my main single target skill with lightning strike for multiple targets or when I wanted to keep some range against harder hitting enemies. Started leveling ground slam towards the end as this would probably be even better in this role.
Tempest shield with more block and added damage is perfect for this build.
Shield charge was mainly used for quickly closing the distance and stunning targets. Leap slam was also there primarily as a mobility skill, especially after I started using the anvil.
My dps wasn't great, partly because I was switching over some of the skills towards the end as I got a better idea of exactly what I wanted to do with this character. It was enough to kill normal mobs in 1-2 hits though and with the gems fully leveled and better support skills and auras, obviously would be even stronger.

As for survival, with my current gear setup it has 1959 life, 3638 armor(48% estimated dr), 262 evasion(9% chance to dodge), 58/47/77% resists, 58% block chance, 7% chance to block spells. All of these stats are standing in town and completely unbuffed at level 60, having gone no further than Mericless ledge and possibly a couple skipped quests along the way.

Gear was all self-found/crafted except for the Anvil which I bought towards the end for 2 chaos.

This was definitely fun and I'll probably play it more. I'm thinking it could be a lot of fun with Aegis Aurora and the new chest armor as well(good resists already and can easily grab a couple more lightning resist nodes, the high block chance would also work well for the ES regen and for limiting how much you get shocked). The new stun support gem would also be good.

I just realized this build concept could be even more fun with the new Scion class. Seems like that would be an almost ideal use for it as the shield block nodes are pretty evenly scattered around the entire tree.
