Ways to Remove High-end Items from the Game (To Curb Item Inflation)

It's like I said, it's personal greed or economy... not both.

The economy *will* die if you don't recycle top tier items.

I intend on getting in on the ground floor if I play... I do not actually care which system they use, however I felt the need to provide the theory behind it.

I understand it's a game, and on one hand the fun of having a powerful item is alluring, but it's directly coupled with no forward progress of your character and subsequent quitting... so in light of that it's not so alluring. When you achieve top tier items, people *will* quit because they have nothing to strive for. They will also pass these items on to their friends, if not permanently, temporarily; or they will sell them for real money... great items don't often just sit in lockers.

With degradation you cycle out top tier gear while the character hunts new content, so ideally the allure of more gaming lasts longer. It also reduces the USD value of in-game items preventing other issues like scamming players through paypal or whatever.

On top of permanent top tiers ruining gameplay for players, it also ruins the economy.

Are these two aspects worth the potential that someone might think "oh, this awesome item only lasts for 500,000 attacks... that's 5 attacks per second or only 100,000 seconds... that's only 28 hours of me not moving from this chair... unacceptable!"

I won't pretend to know... and I really don't care either way. I know some people will whine.. they are the people who don't use the market and are hardcore gamers. Everyone else essentially benefits from getting rid of top tier items.

The durability on your PC must be getting low!
Just to be clear, GGG said they didn't like repair mechanics. Like in D2 where you had to repair your items every time you were in town for no real reason.

Ok well humour me here. Let say that i have a currency item that rerolls stats. Now what incentive do i have to reroll these stats if this weapon is going to degrade. The point is i will hang onto to these items. Right there you have made it so that the currency item is no longer its own sink. Not saying everyone will do that, but i will. I would rather hoard my currency items for a new weapon or gem with full durability. I understand you want the economy to be a lasting and fun. However you can't simply say greed vs. economy. Where is the greed in saying the weapon i cleared a dungeon for will not be mine because some durability mechanic.

All that this feature will do is add a negative experience. Regardless of the outcomes. I am all for a good economy, but find a way to do it without a bad consequence. I mean i am not going to start leveling a gem if it will disappear after its durability is up.
Yes good sir, I enjoy slaying mythical creatures.
Zid is right.

After all of these posts, still, nobody has referenced an actual game suffering from the problem that is "trying to be solved" in this thread.

D2's economy still works just fine.

Where do high-end items go in D2? Nowhere, that's where. Yet, not everyone in the game is running around in top-level gear either.

Someone tell me about a game, an ARPG, that suffers from an over-saturation of high end items. Also, point out what game suffers from that problem to a degree that destroyed the community that played it.

Titan Quest.

Not ARPG - WoW actually was (I quit it just before Cataclysm).

Well, today there is a couple of active ARPGs actually.

Titan quest is open servers so it will suffer a lot from that.
Diablo 2 certainly suffers from it :P

However, on the problem posed for reroll currency items... a reroll currency item, by the simple virtue of a reroll, could give similar power on a weapon (rerolled) and increase durability (since it's technically a new weapon.)

This would make reroll currency items even more valuable imo.

Not sure how D2 suffers from it. One of the highest end items, the Zod rune, is incredibly rare (or at least it was when I last checked) and as such you could trade it for anything. The same with the Shako. The problem being talked about in this thread is the overabundance of high end items, not the scarcity of them.
