Ways to Remove High-end Items from the Game (To Curb Item Inflation)

Leagues can be temporary or permanent and they all have different custom rules. You can read a little about them here: http://pathofexile.com/leagues/
or check out the thread.

I think you make a good point that items shouldn't die during an instance.

Yeah while I was writing it I was thinking about how annoying some of those system have been in the past... and the most annoying thing was when you put something on and it poofs in the middle of a fight and now you are punching for 10 damage and have to fiddle with your other weapon sets (or armor and you are now instantly dead)... it's just a headache that should be done away with... it doesn't help balance and it's simply not fun.

Now that's a compromise I'd personally be willing to see - durability without the option of repairs, but only actually losing the item upon leaving an instance. Presumably the game would let you (and maybe others) know at the point the item "broke" so you could looking extra-carefully for that replacement item.

Of course, whether the devs decide to implement it or not (they may have to increase drop rates to give comparable items a reasonable chance of showing up, for example) is up to them - they've stated they think the repair/durability mechanic isn't fun and therefore something to avoid.
I have wandered through insanity;
I have walked the spiral out.
Heard its twisted dreamed inanity
In a whisper, in a shout.
In the babbling cacophony
The refrains are all the same:
"[permutations of humanity]
are unworthy of the name!"
Fun is relative though. Repairing constantly is not fun. I do not believe a system of repairs is worthwhile.

I do think that a crafting mechanic for increased durability by upgrading material type is more fun and less tiresome, because it's done only a couple times over the life of the item. It's an optional thing that players could choose to do or not, depending on how they value the item.

I think fine grained durability is a bad mechanic, but I think that overall durability is mandatory... unless someone can provide another mechanic that doesn't promote the treadmill and recycles at the high end.

Items with a higher quality rating could degrade more slowly.

Perhaps all items decay slowly over time, but you can use them as crafting components as long as they haven't decayed completely. This way you get a chance at a better item, but it could also be worse. Either way, you should have your next item.
what about variables. Like my sword has 30 minutes left or 30 points and then i get to the boss with no sword. That hardly sounds like a mechanic i would want implemented. The crafting idea seems like a good one though.

A solution for this was already provided. No item would decay to 0 while inside an instance.

Isn't item degradation one of the sinks that GGG said they didn't want to implement? The idea of an item just degrading just doesn't sound right in a ARPG. I could see a special class of high tier weapons using this feature. You have to realize that if new players realize that the really good item they just found will eventually degrade into nothingness than it gives a feeling of despair."well this item will just degrade what the point of collecting if i know it will just get destroyed". I really don't think sacrificing the player's experience is worth this idealistic economy.
