Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.

I would like to see how this works first hand before making a decision on how it will work. However, I worry that in the harder difficulties if the allocation system isn't adjusted correctly, it can give ranged characters an unfair advantage.
Melee deserve to have the first grabs on loot because they have to stand right up front and get beat on to do their damage. This exposes them to much more risk then the ranged characters hiding in the back. To then give those ranged characters a few seconds to reach the item after using the melee as an unwilling meat shield seems kinda bleh. But like I said, can't really judge how it works until I get in game and see it for myself. Last edited by NorwaysBest#2187 on Aug 17, 2011, 2:27:50 PM

Will there be any party? Like in D2? Cause that will be much better, if you have players (friends) with you in your party, that the whole party should see the drop. They would give the item to the one whoo needs the item more anyway. If there are players not from the party, the will see the item after 5-10 sec.

From what I've read, all those who are in favor of allocated loot have the same justification: "fairness." If you look at what little story has been released for this game, nothing indicates that ANYTHING is supposed to be fair.
Your character has committed a crime. Instead of being tried for that crime, they've been banished to a post-apocalyptic land of monsters and demons. Your character is not necessarily a good guy, and not out to save the world. You're out to make yourself as powerful as you can. This does not sound like the kind of person who care the slightest inkling about somebody else getting their "fair share" of the loot. With a party full of characters like this, there SHOULD be tension and mistrust. Everybody is out for number one. Any kind of permanent allocation would really kill immersion. |

" Come on chris you guys havn't caved in on anything else when it comes to what we loved most about Diablo 2 don't do it now. The people that want dramaless allocated loot systems are probably going to eventually go play the bastardized version of diablo 3 that blizzard is putting out. While I will be playing mostly Cutthroat and Hardcore modes I will also be playing a bit of the default league as well for some of the tournaments and would hate this system. The reason FFA loot is so awesome is that it DOES provide an incentive to make friends that you can trust or the oppurtunity to screw someone u don't like over. It adds to the immersion of the game and creates reasons to play with certain players and avoid others. If I am a ranged clas I WANT to be thinking about when and where I am standing when I kill a powerful monster IF I have a melee guy I don't know near bye. And if that punk jacks my loot I am going to get pissed and try to screw him over in the future. Same as If I was the melee guy and something dropped that I knew I didn't earn, but I didn't like the other guy I would try to jack it and if he raged I would challenge him to fight me for it or just laugh. Bottom line is straight free for all looting is way more immersive and offers a chance for some dramatic things to go down. Drama always makes a game more fun in my book. I can Haz BETA?

I think the whole 2 seconds or 3 seconds that belongs to you is a good idea. I think there def needs to be a timer on items dropped because looters steal and ranged units def cant get anything then.

" Using this logic, why should hacking be banned? Why should characters and skills be balanced? It's terrible logic to apply for this kind of argument. We are playing a co-op type game, so there should be some options of being civilized. |
|
" Same reasoning, actually: it kills immersion. Hacking kills it for obvious reasons; class and skill imbalance are slower to do so, but nevertheless also does so ("I'm only a ranger because they're the most OP"). As for "options of being civilized" - FFA loot does give you the option to be "civilized". Just ignore the items you don't want, and everyone else is free to look things over. Or move on and keep killing things, either one. FFA loot also strikes me as the only option that is capable of sensibly handling both partied and unpartied characters fighting in the same area of an instance - for example, a cutthroat league game where the players aren't quite hostile. I have wandered through insanity;
I have walked the spiral out. Heard its twisted dreamed inanity In a whisper, in a shout. In the babbling cacophony The refrains are all the same: "[permutations of humanity] are unworthy of the name!" |

Gameplay should be paramount, and lore/immersion/realism all take on secondary consideration. With a free for all system, a good portion of the actual "game" we all play is going to be constant vigilance for loot drops. Is paying attention to every drop as it happens fun? I say no, I say it detracts from the fun of actually killing things. Clear a room, check for loot after. Not a paranoid version of whack-a-mole where you have to pounce on the magic item every few minutes.
As for those secondary concerns, it's not very realistic nor a compelling story for a character to ignore the demons swarming around him because "Oh look a sword...I better stop fighting and pick it up right away!" |
|
" Im guessing this issue is mostly a personal preference one. I say yes, it is fun, incredibly fun. It adds a whole new layer of tension and focus to the game. Just casting my vote here to keep the loot as it is, but with the considered changes to make it fairer for ranged/caster classes. |

id say keep the FFA loot.. it usually is the best indicator of the integrity of the players behind the characters in most cases xD
greedy players = untrusted |
