Do you mean a custom channel where all of your friends join, or a messaging command like the one on battlenet that sends a message to anyone on your friends list.

yea custom channel which is only of the people on my friends list, call it a guild chat for friends if you rather, just without the guild lol ;-)

i guess you could do the same with a private room and adding people to join it instead, but in such a game id prefer it to be alot quicker and when i create such a channel my friends gain entry.

its a bit of basic example but back when i used to play runescape, chat room like that for friends and being able to assign ranks within it, such a thing should not only be limited to clans/guilds

call me greedy but id like both

as for friends, if i dont accept someone i dont expect me to show up on their list of online mates at all and certainly no entrance to the friends room

rusty, you do realise there is right click for most of that now right? lol

wut? Right click for what. Its a channel not a friends list/guild.

We're looking for feedback on what chat channels should be available to players.

1. Quest channels

We still don't know how creating party will work - players must be in same town instance, or not - but having separate channel for each and every quest would help finding players wishing to complete some particular quest. There would be quests list, where chosing some quest opens it's chat channel. Players should be able to easily party anyone posting to that channel, and upon party is full or required number of players reached, whole party would be teleported to quest instance. Server should check if player have quest unabled, or finished - in both cases, it should deny access to channel.

2. Boss kill channels

Select Boss from the list, etc. - twist on a quest channels, where character LVL matters. One should not be able to join LVL 50 Boss channel on his LVL 1 ~ 20.

Both channels should work on a global level.

Do you guys have any opinions on how many players is too many for a channel?

Hard to tell. I guess it will take some readjusting, based on how fast messages go off - spammed out - chat window.

Generally, I don't think it would be good if LVL 1 character can use chat at all. Based on how game starts, upon spawning on a beach, chat should be disabled, with message "You need to reach town to enable chat" clearly visible there were chat messages usualy go. Once player reaches first town, that town instance chat becomes available. Player than must reach certain LVL to enable longer "distance" chat channels - for example, LVL 10 to enable Act chat.

Allowing anyone to chat on every channel as soon as he enters the game is BAD idea. Think in terms of "Selling game gold, check (somename).com" - do you REALLY want to make it so easy for those guys as "Account banned - nah, I'll make new one in seconds and go back to business"? Do you REALLY want any low IQ / Zombie player out there to bother others the second after he spawned on a beach? Someone here likes LVL 1 "newbie" beggars?

In short - chat should be an achievement, and "natural" selection mechanism.

EDIT:

There should be global chat, but not for free - buy "Rusty Transceiver" to use it!

For creating a channel for friends.

- /channel* invite <channel name> <player name> (anyone can invite people.Only admins can kick or ban however)

- /channel* playerlist (shows all the players online in the channel and what difficulty and act they are in)

admin controls :
- /assign admin <channel name> <player name>

-/channel* kick <channel name> <player name>

- /channel admintalk <channel name> <message> (this is for admins to make announcements in bold over the channel)

All these commands can be seen through /channelhelp

/assign channel <channel name> <number or letter>

/w <player name> for wisper

i dont know about you but we dont need a list of like 20 commands for chat which some can be done via options and others via right click.. if you want the commands too then fine but ive always hated big lists of chat commands and they always end up being different for every game i play

if you have no idea what i mean by right click and options there is not much point in explaining it, + im out of time in any case lol

What right click is?

I do like the commands as well, as i think for me it feels way faster to type in such things than to right click on a specific player (therefor you have to open a window of course) and find the right option in a long list... But that's just my opinion... The best way is to implement both so everyone could deside on his/her own!

Makes sence. I always find it easy to do things like /gadd <name>.

hmmm a channel box so its easier to use though.... They could have it so that in the social tab in game there is a channels page where you can add and remove channels. You can click on the channels to see whos in them and right click them and so on to do your commands(kick, promote and so on).Obviously you couldn't do this with non user made channels :P. That way user made channels would be set up much like a guild would be. Exept for the guild part.

So yeah :) everones happy this way.

Reason I would be really keen for user made channels is because guilds could have a linked channel between them that they use for trading and setting up partys.

I like the idea of unlocking some channels once you reach the first town. Otherwise dumb questions are asked. plus making them play through a portion will limit spamming. Like getting to quest 3 in act 1. Not that there will be much spamming this early in the game development. If POE does get the market that i am thinking it will. Even if they say there targeting a small niche of gamers i think this particular niche is rather big.
Yes good sir, I enjoy slaying mythical creatures.
Those channels are fine with me. Add a trade channel for sure. Also a Dev/World chat for downtime, special events or anything like that.

Insanity is overrated unless you join me in mine.
I hope there's an option to hide the chat. There are lots of MMO's where the chat can annoyng as hell.

I'm sure there will be. Unlike MMOs, the gameplay in ARPGs comes first and player interaction serves to enhance the gameplay and not the other way around.
