First of all:
I don't understand why an instance chat is needed... Is there any possibility that you are in an instance with people that aren't in your party? If not, than you have everything covered with a party chat.

And as a suggestion:
I would like to have a few ways to see the chat. One overall view, where you can see the what's going on on every available chat channel, in different colors (e.g. general = white, party = blue, guild = yellow, whispers = green, trade = red). Then there should be one option to select the channel you want to be in. E.g. you can select the trade channel and receive only messages from the trade channel (however the colours should stay the same to avoid confusion...)

Here is what i think how it should look like:

Overall | General | Local | Trade | Party | Guild
----------------------------------------------

Chat is going on here in different colours

Whispers should be available in every chat channel of course!

And for the problem of too many players in the general (= overall) thread: You can simply make different groups of channels e.g. general-1-, general-2-, general-3-, putting people randomly in the channel and creating another one when the critical number is reached.
Alternatively you can try to sort the people by region e.g. over the ip adress or the information they gave you on the character creation page. Then you get the following general chat channels: GER-1-, GER-2-, ENG-1-, ENG-2-, POR-1-, POR-2- and so on...
Maybe it would be the best if you add a chat window that is called local, where you use the second method and the general chat where you can use the first method.

Edit: There should be an option like /join General-1- or /join Local-Ger-1- for example. So you can always get in channels with people you want to.
This would be also possible for the guild channels, if they wanna have people from other guilds in there chat as well... Either with the option /invite playerxy (typed in the guild chat by guild administrators) or by a single player typing /join Guild-RandomGuildName- and every administrator of the guild get a window where they could decide if he can join the chat or not... Of course there should be the possibility to /kick persons as well :)

This

With a channel cap of about 40-50 persons (Excluding Overall),until a larger number is needed.
Also a numeric display of how many people curently in those channels.
The option to create channels both private, and public as a user would be very helpfull.

ofc chat channels should be added. I should be abe to talk to people?
The purpose of argument should not be victory, but progress.

i like the idea of a looking for party or looking for specific instance part channel... for example u want to kill some boss for drops, there should be a channel to look for a party for it... also you have to put into effect a channel in which you can trade. Trading is what will make the game have longevity and life beyond just hack and slash... a marketplace / trade channel is a must for success
How about letting players create their own channels? Make a categorized channel list, something like:

General
- Our hangout
- how about them knicks?
- Need help on this build i made.
Recruitment
- "Our guild" is recruiting
Trade
- Selling this awesome ring I found
- My Marketplace
Dungeons
- Looking for friends to party with

Players can then make their own channels, private or public. Make the number of channels you can participate in limited to also limit the spam.

Sure, It will most likely become a huge list. But i'm sure there will be a good way to deal with that.

edit: Since trading is done in town this might be an awkward way to do it.

Let the players create their own channels... you'll account for 95% of player needs in one fell swoop. I know you guys have seen the benefits in IRC and on reddit, so I'm not sure why this is even up for debate.
Templar Shadow Knight (build in progress)
Hope we will get a trade chat.

I am also in for LFG chats where an individual can apply to a forming group for different quests.
If u introduce something like 'trade broker' npc that would sell ur items to other players for a certain fee or something like that, u would drastically decrees the spam and overflow in trade channel and make players have more time for game and not stand at the outpost for days to spam sell items.

I agree that there is a need for LF channel (which i agree if having options to apply to a group would be the best), group, guild, friend list, private, system info, whisper and overall channel/chat options, which should all have their own colors and could be turned off or on according to wishes of a player.
Besides the well known "chats" that are mandatory to a game like this (something like a "Main", "Trade", "LFG" [in wide areas / towns], "Party", "Guild") I would like to raise the question what happens when you are in an instance with your party playing along and a member leaves or disconnects.

I personally dislike the "matchmaking" tools e.g. the dungeonfinder in WoW.

So I suggest the opportunity for the partyleader to enter the globel "LFG / LFM" chat and pick out the class / level / whatevs needed to finish the run.

If a suitible player via the chat system is found he can be invited to the group and enter the instance.

If you never try then you'll never know.
