Chat Channels

We're looking for feedback on what chat channels should be available to players. This was mentioned briefly here, but we didn't get many replies so we've pulled it out into a new thread.

So far these are the four standard chat methods:

- Instance chat: All the players in the instance with you. It's basically the default local chat.

- Party chat: This spans instances. You can talk with party members who are elsewhere.

- Guild chat: We haven't announced guild features, but there will definitely be chat channels for them.

- Private messaging: You can of course send messages directly to other players. We'll try to integrate this with the forum

The question is what other channels we should support.
We obviously can't throw every player in the world into the same global chat permanently, because there would be far too many messages. However, we do want people to be able to talk to others who are not in their instance.
This is especially important for new players who might need to ask questions that more experienced players can answer.

Our initial thinking was that we'd have an "Act chat" where all the players from that act/difficulty can talk freely. That way they're not spoiling quests for players who aren't in that act. These channels could potentially split into multiple separate channels if there are too many players. Do you guys have any opinions on how many players is too many for a channel?

There are also questions about trade channels. We're anticipating much trade will take place on the forums, but some players will surely want to trade in game also.

Players will be able to disable channels that they're not interested in.

In hon you can create your own chat channels. So you and your friends could create one and all join it.

looks good. I would also like to see a specific trade channels. As in someone who want to sell something. Instead of clogging up the regular channels they can appeal specifically to a trade channel. There could be a local and bigger trade channels.

This would make it to where we don't hear people peddling there items in general chat and it would be easier to find items just by going to the specific chat.
Yes good sir, I enjoy slaying mythical creatures.
A dedicated trade channel is definitely a good idea. Make it so it can only be accessed from town so that way trade can be focused in the town instances.

I more coolys idea for trade channels would be: sword trade , axe trade , staff trade ect. Another one could be : Int trade , Str trade , Dex trade.

I'm a wee bit confused. An instance in this case spans across all acts. And, since questing out in the wilderness creates an instance within the main instance, it means that if someone beats the Act One boss, it doesn't effect the other players who have not reached her yet. Does that sound right?

The instance is just your private copy of the world area you're in at the moment. For example if you're partied with a friend, and you both enter a cave together, then you're the only players in that instance. Someone else playing separately in the same cave (with a different party) would be in a different instance and would not be available in your instance chat.

You only get quest status changes from things that happen in your instance.

Let me know if it's still unclear :)

I think the instance chat should definitely be expanded into area chat. Unless people can invade your instances regularly, instance chat will be like a subset of party chat. If there is party and area chat as your main chats, party can be for specific strategy or chating with closer people. In area chat you can discuss pretty much anything that comes to mind(off topic stuff, game mechanics, builds, monster weaknesses of that area etc) with people of similar level.

I think tpapp has the trade well figured, while in the wilderness you aren't going to want to read through all of the trades or you might get distracted and lose your hardcore character. When taking a breather in town you can switch it on and see whats available. For traders you can hang in town swapping stuff for as long as you like.

So I think an Area chat, Party chat, Trade chat(in towns), Guild chat and Private messaging would cover everyone, and at most have 3 channels & messaging going at once.

It's true you could have the capability of creating your own channels for you and your friends, or different groups you interact with, but that is kind of what the guild is for.
First of all:
I don't understand why an instance chat is needed... Is there any possibility that you are in an instance with people that aren't in your party? If not, than you have everything covered with a party chat.

And as a suggestion:
I would like to have a few ways to see the chat. One overall view, where you can see the what's going on on every available chat channel, in different colors (e.g. general = white, party = blue, guild = yellow, whispers = green, trade = red). Then there should be one option to select the channel you want to be in. E.g. you can select the trade channel and receive only messages from the trade channel (however the colours should stay the same to avoid confusion...)

Here is what i think how it should look like:

Overall | General | Local | Trade | Party | Guild
----------------------------------------------

Chat is going on here in different colours

Whispers should be available in every chat channel of course!

And for the problem of too many players in the general (= overall) thread: You can simply make different groups of channels e.g. general-1-, general-2-, general-3-, putting people randomly in the channel and creating another one when the critical number is reached.
Alternatively you can try to sort the people by region e.g. over the ip adress or the information they gave you on the character creation page. Then you get the following general chat channels: GER-1-, GER-2-, ENG-1-, ENG-2-, POR-1-, POR-2- and so on...
Maybe it would be the best if you add a chat window that is called local, where you use the second method and the general chat where you can use the first method.

Edit: There should be an option like /join General-1- or /join Local-Ger-1- for example. So you can always get in channels with people you want to.
This would be also possible for the guild channels, if they wanna have people from other guilds in there chat as well... Either with the option /invite playerxy (typed in the guild chat by guild administrators) or by a single player typing /join Guild-RandomGuildName- and every administrator of the guild get a window where they could decide if he can join the chat or not... Of course there should be the possibility to /kick persons as well :)
lol trade channel as one base channel would be hell in a heavy trading game like this.Chris was asking what other channels people would like to see. Your telling how a standard chat channel works in any game that he would already know. Nice unrelated stuff their.

"I think tpapp has the trade well figured, while in the wilderness you aren't going to want to read through all of the trades" I haven't played one good mmo/online game where you can see trade chat out of a town.

Post new channel ideas please. Theres many interesting ideas that could be chizzled out in this thread.
