Channels should be activated as an option by the player.

I honestly believe you should give the option to create custom channels.

Communities and group of friends always benefit from such measures, just like on D2 and even WoW. We'd always create language specific channels like "PoE Portuguese Channel" or clan specific channels to facilitate communication between buddies\guildies\friends\wtv.

I don't know how it would affect servers\performance, but that would be a big plus.

If it's not possible, then it doesn't really matter besides local\global\trade\party.

I agree with everything you said, even though it's not that simple to implement. As soon as you add custom channels, you find out that's not enough because people need more functionality added to them. I would expect it to have no noticeable impact on server performance. Here's how I envision it would work. Channels could be created automatically just by typing /join channelname, if it doesn't already exist. Once a channel has been empty for a while it simply disappears. Do realize that if you allow players to create their own channels there also will be a request for "ops", in other words, for one person to have control over who gets kicked/banned from that channel. It would basically be an IRC service. And if we're going that route anyway, perhaps even allow players to join their custom channel from an IRC client outside of the game, and talk to their friends and guildmates who are in-game (in their custom channel). Cool! (Do not allow IRC clients to connect to any channels other than private ones and even then, allow the "channel operator" to disable text entry from anywhere other than PoE itself, to stop a spambot from flooding his channel.)

Been said before, but I'd really like to see persistent user-created chat channels that we can moderate/password ourselves.
Fantastic stuff in this thread.

Only question is, when might we see some of this implemented?

Before OB I'm hoping, but will this be in 9.12 or 9.13?

Don't know if its been said, but would like to see multiple chat tabs, with fully reconfigurable text/color, and what channels each tab shows messages etc.
One issue i repeatedly run into is that i accidently 'delete' the global # tag when writing messages...IMO you should not be able to delete this tage when pressing enter and typing your message...

The 'symbol' should only change when you do like /global /local /party....and pressing enter should always remember your last entry.
