Chat Channels

How about personalized (client-side) regex filters? So beyond the normal chat channels, any individual could tell their client to take any sentence containing "WTB" and highlight it purple or completely squelch it. And since this is all client-side, there's no added strain on the server.

IE:
Spoiler
Actual Chat:
SoAndSo: WTB crazy gold amulet of craziness
SoAndOtherSo: WTT thingy majig
Noob1: This is probably a noob question but,
Noob2: I HATE BEER

Personal Regex Options
'wtb%s' = purple
'wtt%s' = pink
'%snoob%s' = off

Chat Now:
(purple)SoAndSo: WTB crazy gold amulet of craziness
(pink)SoAndOtherSo: WTT thingy majig
(deleted)
(deleted)

It could be made to highlight whole lines or just words. It could be made to change color, underline, bold, italics, etc. The expressions themselves (being small strings) could then be easily stored on the server for those of us who use multiple computers.

This is also great when you don't necessarily want to mute someone entirely, just most of what they say. Eg, for when you no longer want to hear about D3.

Since I made a pic for another thread I'll post it here as it illustrates the problem we are facing already in closed beta and which should not be underestimated as it's a turn off for a lot of people:

My proposed solutions are either:

- Global chat is a paid purchase. Non paying customers can talk in town, in guild chat and PM. They can read chat too, from which one can learn lots as the same question appear very often.

A paid chat channel won't stop spam or trolls altogether but probably greatly reduce it. It shouldn't be too cheap either; Anyone serious about the game will see a 5-10$ investment worthwhile I would imagine.

- Level 1 characters should not be able to talk in chat. Only to read. There should be some condition to reach such as level 5 or half an hour playtime, which would alsop help greatly reduce spam from trolls as "diabloIIIbetter" in this screenshot. At the same time it would not solve problem with "rushhand" because he did mention level 17 at some point meaning he did play a fair bit. Which is why a paid channel is better.

If this was a MMO I would understand being wary about adding a paid global chat but this is an ARPG. Global chat isn't necessary at all, it should be considered luxury, a community feature, something that you pay to get more out of the game.

Keeping in mind everyone may be able to read it, I don't see how this would hurt new players once there is some basic FAQ/Help in game, not to mention you can learn a lot just by reading the discussions about mechanics that other players have.
I think the solution is to provide more options, not limit features.

As you said this won't stop spam or trolls. It may or may not reduce it, but it will push spammers and trolls into other (free) channels.

For me, I'd be more turned off by a game that limits me instead of limiting the perpetrators of chat abuse.

If everyone's still able to read it, the trolls will still be getting their message across. AND nobody but paid users could respond to it. This makes the channel much more densely populated by spam and trolling.

The best and easiest solution to this is to enable a timer keeping people from posting a ridiculous number of times in a row in rapid succession. Ignore lists are already available. Being able to squelch certain types of comments would be fantastic. But overall, this sort of thing needs to be mitigated real time by a chat channel admin, someone monitoring for abusive behavior and flagging users against speaking in the channel.

TLDR:
Pay2Speak just pushes spam, trolls, and legit comments into other (free) channels where it may not be appropriate. There are many better solutions than limiting the innocent.

...das wichtige ist nicht der Fall, sondern die Landung.
1. would love to see a bnet style chat system with avatars and private channels.

2. Suggestion for how to do it:

A. When you select your character and log into the game instead of going into the world directly, you first enter "the shipyard" which is basically just the old multi-mini-channel bnet system with private channels users could set up and run privately, you could set your options to default you into a particular private channel to avoid the spam and trolling of public channels.

From the shipyard you can enter the world and start playing with another single click of a button.

OR

B. Keep everything how it is now, but each town has a "tavern" when you enter the tavern it turns into the chat/avatar system explained above (again basically b.net style chat)

C. This could even be locked off content that people have to pay to access? Just chat and social hang out no power involved so it seems like the perfect kind of thing to sell in the POE ethical microtransactions model...and a portion of people will always pay for enhanced social content in an MMO

D. There could also be upselling into private/guild chats for an additional purchase beyond the initial required purchase to enter the tavern.

I. Avatars show up that you can look at, so at any given time you can see a dozen avatars at the bottom of your screen and scan then to see what gear they have on or check out your friends new upgrade or show off your upgrade.

II. Be able to access ladder rankings so people can scan the ladder and debate or discuss how certain players seem to be doing.

III. Whoever owns the channel should be able to kick or ban players and give other trusted friends the ability to do so to regulate spammers and trolls.

P.S. Please don't be negative about the micro-transactions ideas I threw in, these developers need to make money on this game so it can succeed and send a message to the gaming world, so the more revenue streams they have the better :-)
Looking for more guild members for races/4 month hc leagues, pm for info
There should be a way to make the chat a bit smaller. It´s so damn big. ^^
I love to use the edit button. :P

Greetings from Germany.
Yes, bring something very similar to old battlenet chat channels, and the community will just flourish.

I'd like to be able to make it bigger and more transparent myself.

In hon you can create your own chat channels. So you and your friends could create one and all join it.

great idea!
Act [X] Channel
[Zone] Channel
Trade Channel

Channels should be activated as an option by the player.

Player can create private channels and ask others to join.
