The whole idea behind the so called “crafting system” in this game is wrong-headed.
" I'm not actually not sure if GGG started referring to orbing things as crafting, or if that language was the fault of the players. Honestly I think the players started it. A better name is obviously gambling. PoE does not have a crafting system, it has a gambling system. Gambling systems are fun for many people, but not if theyre expecting crafting. So we as the community should probably try to address this problem of terminology, as expectations are a massive factor in happiness. Last edited by aimlessgun#1443 on May 2, 2013, 9:15:39 PM

" Indeed - as in aimlessgun's response above, it should be renamed to 'random slot machine system' for those who don't seem to get it. Once renamed, all the complaints about the system being 'flawed' can then just... go away. To answer aimlessgun - I am fairly sure it was GGG who used the term first. I used to be pretty pissy about how crappy the "crafting" system in this game is, but I got over it after I made myself realize that orbs aren't generally intended for that purpose. Additionally, most of the orbs are completely fine, such as augs, alts, trans, alch, chance, blessed, regals are perhaps too rare, and in my opinion should be about as common as alchs, divines are maybe a tad too rare as well; truth be told it's really only exalts that are a big fuckup and need to be fixed; there's nothing like using an exalt on an item already worth 5 exalts, and having it give you +3 thorns, that's just bad design, and it's no wonder they're not used too often and instead hoarded as pseudo gold. Fusings/Jewelers/Chroms are flawed as all hell as well, but that's a different debate.
For the time being, we just have to accept that orbs are for maps, and hoarding for bartering for items with other players, as their on use effects are far too random for their rarity, and you're better off keeping them rather than using them. But this doesn't mean the "crafting" is a failure, as I don't believe anymore that that's even remotely the intent of GGG when it comes to orbs. The closest thing to crafting of any sort in this game would be vendor recipes and such, which are sorely underutilized by GGG at the moment, and they should step up the pace and add more, essentially making vendors a Horadric Cube. " you're probably at the same point I was, when I got my first sudden urge to rage-quit this game :) for some reason, I'm still here. maybe I've become a masochist, I don't know. but I doubt your patience will last as long as mine did... at this point, I'm just waiting for the next patch notes. unless I see a strong emphasis on bug fixes, and the start of a rework to the drop and crafting systems - or to be more precise: if the next patch is yet another "added 2 useless skill gems and 5 more useless item mods, to finally kill whatever was still left barely alive in gambling (sorry 'crafting')" - I think I'll leave and come back at release. maybe. " Yeah. Me too. But I won't come back if they won't change the crafting and the melee survivability issues. There are other BETTER games around. Last edited by Martinezz123#5213 on May 3, 2013, 8:05:10 AM

" Out of curiosity, other than Diablo II, name these better ARPG's you're talking about. |

You are not the first (surely not the last) to be mad about crafting, I gave up my SC char because after 2-3 month of intense grinding/trading I had something like 10-15 exalt, and I spent all on currency to craft myself a bow. As I need to improve ALL my items, I didn't had the courage to put again 3 month per gear ^^. So I started HC and races, and their is a lot of fun here !
Spoiler
Not the best bow I know but still a huge improvment for me regarding my previous bow. Just to say I understand your point =) But I have several questions : When you started POE, what did you know about the game, how have you seen your gameplay/game experience (before playing it) ? What were your expectations, in terms of content/mechanics and patience (how much time do you consider reasonnable to wait until you have substantial updates) |
