5 top reasons an item gets listed with no price

5. The seller has no idea what it's worth. Make an offer, but it's likely going to be rejected as the seller gets cold feet. This guy is paranoid. Be friendly but not too helpful, talk about anything BUT the item, check in periodically if it hasn't sold. He'll remember you and unload it to you.

4. The seller has a vague idea what it's worth, it's got a rare combination of affixes, and he wants to gouge you for it Open for haggling. Do your homework and present a fair starting bid. If no success, worth revisiting as league deadline looms.

3. The seller knows pretty clearly what it's worth, but he spent ~10x that much crafting/acquiring it, so wants to collect on the opportunity cost, not the EV of the item. Open for patient and creative haggling. Again, let time crunch be on your side. Be prepared to offer crafting currency (annuls, divines) as part of the mix.

2. The seller doesn't really want to part with it, he wants to keep it This player intends to take this item to standard and use it on another character. Time crunch at end of league won't work in your favour here, try to keep him focused on what league is left and the possibility of a fresh start with an injection of currency from the sale of this item, to you. Be nice.

1. The seller doesn't intend to sell the listed item, he's trolling the waters for price fixing. Haggling with this seller is a waste of time and he's just collecting offers. That said, you can gather valuable information from this guy you can later use to make better offers to real sellers. Talk up the product, let him blab with pride about his acquisition. Then make an end-run around this guy and find another source.

Trading strategy in each case is in bold.

My favorite part about offering for an item that's listed for no price is when they're up for 2-3 weeks or longer. I usually do a bit of research to find what the price could be. Pretty much, doing all the work the seller didn't want to do already. I try to find items that are really close to what I want (that actually have a price)

This is what you should do. Asking " hi, are you there?" and " hello, how much?" is so cringy stupid.
Almost as stupid as offering 50c for something obviously worth a couple exalt.

If the item is "obviously worth a couple exalt", why not list this price? What's the problem with that? And no, questions like "hello, how much?" aren't so stupid as they may seem. Because usually a seller has a rough price in mind. And often people, who don't set prices, are being rude in conversations (don't know why). So instead of making offer and then listening what a scum and lowballer I am, I sometimes can just ask: "rough price?"

Once in this league I wanted to buy an amulet with certain stats. I found one that suits me without price on trade. It had 40+ int, crit multi, life and some cold res. So it was decent but nothing really special. I offered something like 50-60c (can't remember the exact number). The guy answered that he plays perma-league atm and will be playing Blight tomorrow. I said ok, will pm you tomorrow. Tomorrow I didn't find that amu on trade. One day later I found it, and it had price, and the price was 5ex. I was just laughing out loud and didn't bothered that guy anymore. BTW that amu is still on trade, only now it costs 4 ex :)
Curiosity is followed by ambition. Ambition is followed by madness.
I have premium stash tabs that are set to public with individual prices. Absolutely nothing I list/price EVER shows up on POE.Trade with a price but it does show up on GGG’s trading site. No idea why this is the case but I suspect there are others like me that have this problem. The only clear jerks I see and block are the ones listing 20 Ex items for 1 chaos orb. Those guys are clearly out to waste time.
Interesting feedback.

After further experiments I think its generally wasteful to pursue those items unless you want a 10 to 30 minute back and forth negotiation that 75% of the time goes nowhere.

These people list the items specifically because they want to waste time and haggle, but not sell items, or they would list a price.

I dont think items should be able to be listed without a price, but easy to ignore them.
I only tried once (last league) and it was a really good experience. I was interested in a Rat's Nest with a 40% Tornado Shot damage enchant I wanted. I offered a Rat's Nest with a Cyclone enchant (don't remember which one) and he agreed. I don't think he needed it but still he agreed to the trade, I thought it was nice. I guess it doesn't work so well for high end items though...
Depending on the item and how much I want it:

I'd lowball the shit of the seller if it's a rare (he didn't take the time to list a price; I am not wasting my time trying to guess what he wants for it). Take a rare ring for example. People find stuff like this
and list it expecting to get 50c+ offers for it.

Or if it's a unique where you can usually get a sense of the item's worth based on availability I'd offer the lowest listed price for it.

Also the excuses that the item is in a dump tab (if it's a dump tab why did you make it public?) or it might be worth more 'cuz I was the only one who messaged you twice in 10 minutes (even though the item's been listed for a month) because you're an asshole who can't be bothered to reply unless I offer you an ex for a triple t4 item just prove why buyers should not bother making a decent offer for anything listed without a buyout.

Also most sellers doing this expect buyers to study the market; add 20% and make an offer that would make them rich from one sale.

Why even list it with no price except as a negotiation technique?

They're probably not specifically listing that item. They have the tab set to public and most likely price each item in that tab individually. That's how I have a couple of my tabs setup, and if I place items in them without setting a price they'll appear listed but with no price. I've had people send me offers. Usually low balls.

I've also had it happen where people whisper me offering me a decent price on something I didn't even think had value lol.
I low ball. Somewhat in the vicinity of a fair price but just low enough that I could technically be considered a thief. Success rate probably in the 70s or at least feels that way. I find that people put items up without a price generally because of laziness or time constraints and are actually eager to sell and willing to negotiate. I do the math for them and they pay me for the convenience by accepting my low ball offer. At least that's what I tell myself, and sometimes them.
