Unplayable Lag/Sync Issues
" Sorry I should've been clearer there, you'll need to run the game (I guess in windowed mode would be easier) while you're doing the MTR so you can be sure one of these in game lag spikes occurred during the MTR. Could you even send a screenshot of the game window and WinMTR window both running with one of the spikes visible if possible?
Sure I'll get on that in the morning and send you the info.

Hi Thomas, I will be sending you a WinMTR stat file.
I am based in France, and for my WoW & SWTOR raids on EUR servers I tend to get an average latency of 50ms. However, when playing PoE (which is great btw) I am always in the 165-200ms range, which seems way to high. Is my ISP / Box not reading packets correctly from your EYR server? Perhaps I need to change or check something on my side ? I want to continue to enjoy this great game, but I would like to decrease latency/less spike, especially as I am in EUR area. thanks for your attention kind regards. |

" Please see my reply to your email - basically it looks like your ISP is taking a suboptimal route to our servers. You can try send them the MTR output and see if they are able to use a different route (or maybe investigate why the current route is so high).
" Thanks for the info. From your output it looks like there may be a problem with your connection. The first hop "home" that normally has 1~2ms latency has a "worst" spike of 118ms - this is a Bad Sign. Similarly every hop along the route has a "worst" several times worse than the average, which suggests that your spikes are being caused by something at the start of the route. I'm not sure what sort of connection you have, but try to use wired connections (e.g. network cable from your computer to your modem/router, and hopefully your internet is not wireless). Make sure your connection isn't being used by other things, e.g. torrents or background downloaders. Try resetting your modem/router, and if that doesn't help possibly see if there are firmware updates for it. If possible try test your connection using a different modem/router (assuming you can get your hands on a spare one), or ask your ISP if they can identify any problems with your connection - they might be able to do some sort of line test or something.
Unfortunately my connection is wireless and I can't go to hard line at the moment. I'll try and see if reseting the router helps again. Thx for the help though

I'm also experiencing some strange lag issues. I've tried playing with a few different combinations of routers and firmware and directly with the modem. Here are the results of some somewhat short tests.
Just modem: Seems to work fine. Ping is a steady 65ms with nearly a straight line in the ping graph in game. Linksys WRT54GL Router: I tested this router with the original Linksys firmware, Tomato firmware, and DD-WRT firmware. All 3 firmware results were the same. Lowest ping in game is about 65ms with constant spikes to 300ms every 5 seconds or so and occasionally going from 65ms -> 300ms -> 900ms -> 65ms. Strange part is seemingly randomly (random day and random time), the lag spikes will be gone. The spike patterns on the ping graph are still there, but they are really small of about 20ms and the game is fully playable. This is the part that blows my mind and is really frustrating. Image here of what the ping graph looks like (also WinMTR) while lagging. Buffalo WHR-HP-G300N: I only tested this with the firmware it shipped with which was Buffalo's version of DD-WRT. I bought this router thinking it would solve the lag issue, but I'm going to return it so I didn't mess with the firmware other than simply updating it. Results were the same as the other router. Worked fine some days with tiny spikes and was unplayable with massive spikes other days. It doesn't look like it's an ISP routing issue since it works with just the modem, but also doesn't seem like a router issue since it does work some of the time. And yes, I was testing with only one computer plugged into the router turned the wireless off. No other programs were using bandwidth at the time. Random info: - Pinging google while lagging in game was fine at 30ms and no spikes. Even pinging the game server I'm on (while lagging), is fine at 50ms and no spikes. - Both NA and EU experience the same lag spikes. - Another game, Tera Online, experiences the same lag spikes on both NA and EU (pretty much exactly the same lag as PoE gets). All other games that I play are completely fine. - Pinging the router/modem is a constant 1ms. Connection in general is flawless and running at 50mbps down and 3mpbs up. - I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. - If I'm connected to the VPN Hotspot Shield, these lag spikes are completely gone, regardless of which router I'm connected to. I'm curious to know what this means and if there's a way to use this info to fix the lag spikes (without having to actually use the VPN, of course). Not sure if any of this will help, but I just want to get this info out in case there's some insane fix out there. edit: I do love the game when I'm actually playing it, though. :) Last edited by Perb#1883 on Apr 7, 2012, 8:20:26 AM

Small bump here. Anyone else having similar issues? Or is anyone not having issues, but using a similar router setup as mine?
The modem I'm using is a Cisco DPC3825. " What operating system are you using? Sounds like "Wireless Zero Config" is giving you trouble. This Windows service checks for wireless access points every minute or so which causes a lag spike. Try: Start > Run > services.msc and then turn off Wireless Zero Config. Do note that this service needs to be on to connect to your router, but after you're connected it can be turned off. If turning off the service does fix your issue, check out this site for info on automating turning it on/off. Last edited by Perb#1883 on Apr 8, 2012, 9:47:16 AM

Thx for the help but the Wireless Zero Config is built into the wireless auto config for vista users. this means vista users can't turn it off w/o turning off our wireless conn. However thx to your idea i went searching further online and found this for vista users http://forums.techarena.in/windows-vista-network/770230.htm. After reading that I search for vista anti lag and came up with http://www.mapmodnews.com/article.php/Vista-Anti-Lag-VAL-1.1.1-Wireless-Spikes. I downloaded the progam and ALL my lag is gone period. I run perfectly smooth now :). Guess i can go back to hardcore mode. Please note this fix is for vista wireless users only.
