What's The Point Of Playing Hardcore?

Like you may be, I was once a huge HC fan. But I've now come to realize that because there are so many surprises in this game, because gameplay is constantly changing and new features are often added, almost everybody in HC is swimming upstream. Almost everybody in HC dies several times throughout a league no matter how high of a level they achieve UNLESS they're piggybacking on other people (which, to me, defeats the purpose of playing). How can a game be fun when you constantly have to restart or piggyback? I have begun to grow bored of PoE because of this so I've decided to stick to SC after 3.0.
In most single player games, dying allows you to reload your character to a recent point throughout the game rather than having to start all over again. Since PoE is an MMO, people don't get to reset from a recent point. However, SC compensates for this by providing a loss of XP. To make it feel even more like a reset so you don't feel like you're cheating by killing a boss slowly while dying several times, you could reset an instance every time you die. Is HC really required to experience a worthy penalty on death? Are SC penalties not enough? How can HC really be enjoyable in the long term when you're going through new characters and new builds without restraint or just piggybacking on other people? How is HC viable when new content is added like 3.0? Is it fair to claim that most of us are overestimating our abilities? completely no point but self satisfaction and e-peen wagging. it's the same with SSF mode. it proves nothing.
take away alt-F4 and HC will cease to exist. | |

Some people really like hardcore. That in itself is enough of a "point" IMO. Doesn't matter how ill-suited the game may be for it, if people like it, well, fine.

" I'm one - and not the only one I bet :-) almost only playing SSF btw. Highest char was lvl 86 when it ripped in a red map. Have only beaten Atziri, no higher tier boss ( Guardians,Shaper, Uber Atziri,Uber Izaro)so far... Now I'm taking a break after 3 chars ripped in Legacy HC SSF, will return and try to break that record. "Metas rotate all the time, eventually the developers will buff melee"

" I've been playing solo self found hard core for about 3 months (new to the game), and I've never heard of alt+4 before. What does it do? My highest character - level 61 - died to Kaom on cruel. Before that it was not that bad. But I'm with you on this, I'll probably have to try soft core so I can reach the endgame. It will probably make it easier to understand 99% of all the threads on the forum. |

" alt+F4 just closes the screen which might save you if you're close to death. |

" I'm another one. SSF only. Level 90 is the farthest I've got during this League, than I ripped because I started to be over confident with my char, I think it was a tier 13 map. I play hardcore because I like the challenge and the thrill it gives, sometimes it can be very frustrating... but I just could not play without the adrenaline of hardcore. |
