In most languages, when you see the written word, you know how to pronounce it. There might be some uncertainty about the stressed vowels - or not, some languages have specific rules even for that. About the OP, I suppose he meant 'unintelligible' when he wrote 'symbolic'? After all, every alphabet is symbolic. Or did he mistakenly think the Cyrillic alphabet is syllabic?

If you want to know what russian would look like in latin alphabet then just look at polish. Russian would look very similar with consonants running into each other. Some letters would take 3-4 consonants to accurately reproduce with latin alphabet.
Texts written in russian are already about 30% longer on page then for example english. If you were to replace the cyrillic letters with latin equivalent it would grow even longer. If anything then cyrillic is saving trees and harddrive space. | |

" If you mean there's some kind of crime culture in Russia and Eastern Europe it's not the case. This part of Europe is basically poor, the standard of living got nothing to do with their western cousins. Corruption is wide spread. Businesses are hard to progress if you are not a friend of a friend. On the other hand, people are well educated and clever in majority, and aggressive - partially because of the hard conditions they live in, partially because of ethnic, cultural and religious factors. At the end, we could have a clever and aggressive person who has realized the only way to gain wealth is by crime. And he's good in it, because of personal qualities. But it doesn't mean all russians/eastern europeans are like this, it only means those who's taken this path are good in it, thus you hear about them.
