PoE already shrinking/dead?

Torchlight 2 is way up on its original playerbase and is totally thriving.

Torchlight 2 sold over a million copies.
It has a daily peak of 4-5k concurrent players.

Wouldn't really describe that as thriving.

I'm not disputing you as TL2 is hardly thriving, but where did you get your concurrent player numbers? Are you only counting steam?
Logs in plays docks for 2 hours no maps logs off. That's it for most of my friends, boring as hell.

Lots of speculation, not much data.

This plot shows the decline in player interest of a number of popular games over their first 11 weeks of life. The data is from google trends which gauges the search volume for specific terms on a daily basis. Specifically, the numbers represent weekend (peak) search volume.

You can see how dramatically the numbers fall off before settling out. Some even fall below 10% of their peak but none even end up above 40% (discounting obvious exceptional cases). The black dashed line shows the average while the solid black line shows PoE's numbers so far. It's sitting over 10% above the average which is quite good especially if you notice that games above average largely continue to remain above average.

Of course this is an indirect measurement. These aren't actual player numbers and there's no way we could get that data anyway but I think it's reasonable to assume that the search volume and the player volume are tied closely together. It's also important to remember that the games are not plotted on an absolute axis relative to each other. Therefore, even though Diablo 3 ends up at the bottom with 7%, that 7% still represents a significantly larger search volume than many of the other games had at 100%. In that sense, it's almost better to look at this chart as a way of measuring launch hype versus actual product quality. I find that the numbers make more sense when approached from that perspective.

If you'd like a fairly direct comparison, PoE and Torchlight 2 had very similar search volume at their launch (PoE had slightly more). You can see how much more quickly Torchlight 2 declined compared with PoE considering their relatively equal starting position.

Hopefully this gives some more perspective and a more solid grounding to the discussion. You can go back and forth about this or that but without actual numbers it's really just meaningless. Of course, we all new that PoE's population would decline significantly following launch. The real question is where it'll level out and if GGG can continue to grow that base population over the long term. While still early, I think these first few weeks bode well for the game.

Good post.

It is worth noting that it is very possible that the search volume of any game can be linked to reasons other than the popularity of or interest in the game. Games with more complex systems in place might require more 'research'/planning than less complex games which could also skew search volume results.

This game is just too hard for many. It is a true hardcore game that doesn't hold your hand it. Hardcore modes have been in games for a long time but most people don't even touch em.

With this game for some reason it became the only way to play and most people have never done it so when they build a character and he dies this blows their mind and they get pissed and quit.

It has nothing to do with combat or incentives it has to do with video game players going soft over the years.
I reached level 77. I have obtained enough experience this level to reach level 78. But alas I can't stay alive to reach the level.

I used all my money trying to improve my gear and have made no progress doing so.

I died twice today. The first time was due to a poison cloud which killed me from full health before I could even move. The second time was due to a horde of flicker strike using spiders.

But this game has officially lost me as a player as of today. Because I can't stand it anymore. Using everything to gain nothing. Losing experience over deaths that literally happen in a split second. It's a bad system.

Currency, I can get that back. It was my choice to use it the way I did. The deaths, completely unavoidable aside from not entering the map. Dying to the second group of enemies, with no notice or clue as to what they are until 5 of them are using flicker strike on you as a ranger with no chance to escape. No thank you. This is it for me.

I truly hope those of you that remain have fun with whatever this game has left to offer and how ever long it takes before it dies or is dramatically changed.

My build is good in hp. Some say it is too low at 140% and I should aim higher. 2155 hp as a ranger is low. My gear does not have the hp I need because I can't obtain the gear. Although all but 3 pieces of my gear do indeed have an hp increase.

My dps is extremely low at 1100. To obtain more hp I would have to drop it to around 900. I would have to drop it a little lower to gain the evasion I believe I need as well, as my current armor on blocks 35% physical damage.

My resists are all max, except for chaos, which seems to be incredibly hard to max out while maintaining the others, as chaos is a someone rare stat to get on gear, and the pieces never seem to have much resist other than that, which means I would have to drop 1 resist for another.

Some known streamers quit.

This caught my attention...

Streamers today, are like sensational journalism, they have no attachment to any game and couldn't care less for what they are playing. The only game they are good at is the one in which the player-score is the number of viewers they get and the resulting proportional cash they receive. Instead, they use eye-catching titles and play the latest release/trend of games that is out. The objective being always to ride the wave of novelty.

Now there are other streamers, that just plainly fail at games like this. We have seen Two examples of two streamers trying to get into PoE and failing miserably at it. You can't blame them for streaming something else, they were and still are the laughingstock of ARPG gaming.

parties drop off pretty fast because once you reach a sweet spot for farming items/gear/currency you DONT want to do that in a party.

Its like the laughable amount of "players online" shown during D3's early months when nobody could be bothered with public parties (and probably still dont).
