Brian's Feedback to Looting (quote from reddit)

POE has proven to be extremely popular since our Open Beta release, far popular than we could have expected, and so we're obviously catering to a pretty wide audience.

I really wish people would stop using initial popularity in defense of design decisions. If we were to say the initial popularity of a game were the determiner of how good a game was, then Diablo 3 is the world's best game ever made. The first week it was enormously popular and broke all kinds of sales records but after people played it for a while, it turned out NOT to be as good...

As to my use of italics and other various formatting features, frankly I'm disappointed at the pretty unfriendly notes on it you've made. I use formatting to provide some semblance of tone of voice and emphasis. Your inference that I do that for any purpose other than clarity of intent is pretty insulting, and I expected more from you than that.

I was just letting you know how it came across. I thought I was incredibly polite in the way I informed you. I can assure you that if I meant to insult you, you wouldn't have any doubts about it.

Ok, I will chalk this up to the misunderstandings inherent in communications lacking 2 of the 3 normal ingredients (tone of voice and body language).

Ranged characters; question - the melee character risked his life and took damage to kill the boss or mob, and you kited on the outskirts risking little. DO you think you deserve the same chance to get loot, that dropped at the foot of a melee character, that risked his life to stand toe to toe with a mob / boss and take damage, while you were safe half a screen away spamming spells? Who risked more, in the fight, and who, because of that risk, is closer to loot?

For one thing, you shouldn't lump all ranged characters together. I play primarily ranged characters, and all of my characters can and often do fight at range.

At any rate, I do feel I deserve the same chance at loot. The melee character might be taking more damage, but he also has a build designed to take and mitigate damage, so he's not necessarily experiencing that much more risk than me. I need to take a lot less damage than he does to die, so any aggro I take is dangerous to me.

That being said, I also feel the current system gives me more than a fair chance at loot. It's easy enough to get to my drop and get back out of aggro before the timer runs out, and that's before considering my quicksilver flask. If anything, I feel melee have a worse chance than I do to get their drops, since their timers are so short it's much easier for someone else to scoop up loot that was assigned to them.

This system is probably the best FFA loot implementation that I've ever seen.

No worries =)
The best way to solve this solution is to have items that are "auto granted" to a specific player drop right in their inventory.

Other MMOs have done this and it keeps down loot drama which is a problem in EVERY MMO.

If the player then decides that the item that was "dropped" in their backpack is something they wouldn't use...offer it to another player.

Honestly, this is the ONLY thing I don't like about this game (which is small potatoes)...I have only grouped up 3 times, all 3 were to do a BB and all 3 times, someone else was able to get my loot before me...not sure how...no lag...everything was smooth...they just got it.

My 1st was on my Witch, was my first group up and my 1st BB...as a caster, I was standing as far away from Mervaille as I could be and still target her with spells. At this time I didn't even know that items would be "auto-granted" and by the time I figured out that my name was glaring on an item, the timer had ran down and someone else got it.

My Ranger...someone else went in while 3 of us are at lair entrance...nobody knew she had started the fight up and she killed her and looted everything worth while...we only knew what had happened when the announcement that the cave entrance was now open.

The 3rd time (this morning) just unlucky I guess...was on my Shadow with no lag and by the time my eyes adjusted to all the loot that splattered on the floor and I could find my item, timer went away and just as I brought my mouse over to it...POOOOOF...gone.

All 3 of these instances (considering that they are the only 3, which adds up to 100% of the time, I lost my loot due to the current system)put together in a row is what has put an end to me grouping...and yet...when I come across the next main BB...I will almost have to group which means now i go in with a crappy past experience to build off of and I either ninja loot and be the douche-bag or go in with the knowledge that I will be getting the douche...I do not fancy either idea because I try to go out of my way to be nice and help people and make a good name for myself.

There really does need to be a fix on the loot granting portion of the system.

Maybe...make auto granted loot invisible to the the players and have no timer at all.

Nobody sees, nobody can grab it, nobody can whine that the other player was afk and isn't picking it up.
...because where I am going to freak out on someone is not with the yellow stuff (not saying I walk away happy)but with the orange stuff...I haven't pulled one yet and when i see it disappear into someone else's grasp, I am going to freak the fuck out in general chat, party chat, whisper chat and everywhere else and will probably be banned or at least suspended for a while.

"Hi guys, I've never read anything the developers said!"

"It's important to us that Path of Exile has a cut-throat feel where players are not only competing against monsters, but also their fellow players."

Quoted by Chris, one of the developers.

Haha, thank you for saving me the time of finding one of the many quotes that state this =)

Haha, thanx for totally avoiding to answer my post, knowing you got roflstomped

Except GGG doesn't want to reduce "loot drama". It's FFA loot, like Diablo 2.

The loot timers were only added as a way to give ranged characters a fair chance at rares and uniques, and speaking as a ranged character, I feel the current system is a perfectly fair compromise.

Azreal,

To your argument that it would provide an advantage to groups using individual loot as opposed to those using FFA loot, after much thought on the subject, I must concede the point, since FFA looting makes for a dysfunctional public party as people concentrate on looting rather than killing, having individual loot would allow for more effective party groups.

I had not considered this factor, and I must concede it as a valid point.

I can only say then that I will continue to prefer individual looting over FFA looting, though I will continue to support this game regardless either way. I don't need public games anyway.
WHAT? So, people that deliberatly choose the worst system should actually get a profit from doing that? Are you even remotely serious? You call that an argument? I loled pretty hard
You should calm down, fevgatos. Your posts aren't even making sense anymore.

His post was perfectly legitimate and sensible, however.
