Difference between MOBAs and ARPGs in terms of desync
My friend, just look at the picture and you'll understand. I have not the slightest problem with LoL, everyone's free to play what he likes. But i actually DO have a problem with the term. If you'd know me, i'm always concerned about correct terms and words, so yes, this is an actual problem for me.
Not sure what Guinsoo has to do with what you're trying to say. When someone makes a game all other games he makes are in the same genre? Actually it seems to me that you're a little butthurt because i call LoL a "casual" game, or at least more casual than Dota (which is correct, even aknowledge by top LoL players). Doesn't change the fact that it's a great and very succesful game. If you're hurt when someone calls your game a casual game because it IS a casual game, then who has the problem? € " Then why argue with someone who knows all that while stating that he talks "crap"? " im simply replying to your first post which was direceted towards, or rather agains moba term. im not here to argue about lol dota hon or w/e other game in the genre, which is better, which is more original, which one has higher skill cap etc. the fact is that dota games means nothing (beside defense of the ancient games). moba on the other hands describes games of similar type quite well, as i ve stated before. also you could use lol games term then, which would be much more appropriate, cause as far as i know lol is much much popular, and has a higher player base than dota (i would be against that also cause it doesnt describe anything) and much more people would understand what it means. again im not going into discussion of which one is better/more influential etc, but do you call fps games quake games? or unreal tournament games? or cod games? or "insert random subjectively chosen best shooter in the world" games? no, we dont cause its dumb.
I love when people make comments on topic they have absolutely no idea. DOTA and LOL have every single game mechanics available to PoE. Yet I have NEVER had any desynch or sort in LoL, while PoE is abysmal in that terms.
" Stupid comment is stupid. There is "hit roll" in LoL and Dota in the form of "block", "evade", "crit" calculations. Not having accuracy miss is a design choice not lack of game mechanics. Every hit in those games is calculated for crits/block/evasion ability chances. Certain attacks DOES miss moving out of its path, out of range, hiding behind minions etc. That is proof enough that game mechanics involve it without causing desynch(simple example: LoL-Ezrael's Mystic Shot). Auto-attacks not having this mechanic is a design choice, not a lack of game mechanics. And the attacks with that mechanics never cause any deynch. There is not a single thing in PoE that LoL lacks in terms of game mechanics. Difference is one game works, other has excuses for not working. I hope PoE fixes the desynch and command problems. That would be the day I would come back for good buy a huge support pack. |

Plenty of skill shots hit in LoL and DotA hit that don't look like they should or miss even though they should hit because of marginal desync (powershot, shackleshot, and PotM arrow all have this issue). In LoL it's slightly less noticeable because the hitbox for every AoE is slightly larger than the displayed one.

As I understand it, movement and attacks in League of Legends and similiar games are given as commands by the player which are then sent to the server and happen on the client after being processed on the server-side. In ARPG games like Path of Exile, the commands are done instantly by the client and then confirmed by the server afterwards which is where the desync comes into play.
Think about how latency affects each game. With high latency in league, your commands have no effect on the client side and if you try to move your character it simply wont move for a few seconds after the command is given. In PoE, your commands will still be instant and your movement will still be just as fluid as normal, but the server wont confirm your actions until a few seconds have passed. So for example, if you are using abilities on monsters, the damage you are inflicting wont show up on your screen for a few seconds after it should have, and same with damage done to you. In League, the abilities just wont go off at all until the server has processed them. As for Robert_Paulson's post about hit roll, while "skill shot" attacks in League only hit if you are within the hitbox, auto attacks and targeted spells automatically are gauranteed to hit if the attack goes off, regardless of positioning changes after the fact. I think that was the main point he was trying to make. (obviously some abilities used by the target can stop the damage from happening, but that is different, the spell still hits) Last edited by Martial_God#5778 on Jan 11, 2014, 5:48:17 PM

" I used to play the original DoTA competitively, but DoTA 2 just isn't a good game. I prefer LoL, as do other competitive players, which is why LoL is such a big tournament style game. DoTA never evolved it's mechanics, and it's the same game it was over a decade ago, with updated graphics. The competitive play is awful to watch. DoTA is for people who like to farm, while LoL is for people who like to duel.
" 1. I also prefer Wc3 Dota, but there's just no one playing it anymore. 2. Competitive players prefer LoL because a) they like it more b) because it offers more money. Can't argue with that, but you surely can not say the prefer it because Dota isn't a good game =) 3. Counterstrike didn't evolve a bit either and still is very big, just like Call of Duty or Starcraft. When you have close to perfect underlying game mechanics, you don't need to change. 4. Competitive is awful to watch FOR YOU. I enjoy it very much, and so do a lot of other players. 5. The last sentence is just absurd. :D I wonder why so many people are reacting butthurt grande here? Play whatever you like and others do the same. All this was originally only a discussion about the term "MOBA" and that it is wrong when talking about Dota. I'd strongly suggest to let this thread alone now. If you want to be a whiny bitch over LoL vs. Dota, be a whiny bitch somewhere else. Last edited by ahcos#4542 on Jan 11, 2014, 6:35:18 PM
