Same thing rich people do: move themselves someplace else where they interact with such people as little as possible. I prefer shelters with strong drug and alcohol policies; the stronger, the better.

Nevertheless, the nature of shelters is such that, no matter how firmly the shelter emphasizes its lack of tolerance for such behavior, people will partake, and wallow in self-pity; often you're dealing with someone who's temporarily clean but you know is doomed to relapse. For those, my preferred method is to just engage them in deep conversation, often in the form of an ambush. Nothing like interjecting yourself into a conversation with "Original sin is a lie, and the greatest trick the Devil ever pulled; all of us have the free will to avoid sin completely and live holy lives." (I know I'm an atheist; the point is the effect, and those who doubt their own volition are all the more likely to believe in supernatural volition.) That's the one thing all those losers have in common: the belief their lives are predetermined, and their destiny involves them doing fucked-up shit. Attack the core belief; introduce the concept of controlling one's own destiny. I say "introduce" because you rarely will get through to them; the trick is to be the voice they remember next time they fuck up, the voice of their future regret. Hence, distance is still advised.

Do you feel like being homeless has made you manly? Or do you feel like a failure of mankind for being unable to house a family?
Mostly the first, but truly neither; I feel homelessness is an almost ideal method for breaking old, dysfunctional behavior patterns, and an excellent time to reflect on how said patterns came into being, tracing back your mistakes. It's not a badge of courage nor a mark of shame, but a learning opportunity.

No; that's like saying a ramen noodle diet is healthy. Homeless people have ready access to hot, donated meals three times a day, and the portions aren't horrible. As is usually the case with food on a budget, the problem is nutrients per calorie (and in some cases the freshness of ingredients — shelters sometimes rely on donated food, which often means food on the brink of expiration). Affording a truly healthy diet remains a luxury. (However, the place I'm at currently has exceptionally healthy food for a shelter, bordering on unbelievable; it makes me genuinely curious how they're funding the meals.)

What books are you reading? I hope Self-Reliance is one.
Never heard of it. Just finished with Asimov's Foundation trilogy, probably going to reread The Fountainhead next.

There's a few books that have gotten me through hard times. Included on that list are How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene and Self-Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Self-Reliance is exceedingly short (35 pages), more like a long essay really. Based on what I've skimmed in this thread it seems like they'd all be of great value to you, as they were for me. More valuable than therapy at least (and cheaper). Self-actualization must develop internally, not externally - so don't expect a therapist to do much more than be nice to you for an hour or prescribe drugs that invariably dull your wit and wile.

Where do you use the restroom when the need arises? Where I live a majority of "public" restrooms are quite pricey and I assume you count every buck. Same goes for showers etc. - shelter only?
Be ready. You're not paranoid, you're PREPARED.

Do you own a handgun / protection?

In Australia guns aren't commonly in possession of most people, mainly just Police , farmers, feral animal hunters and criminals.

From an outsider looking in at USA gun policy, it would appear that it would be a semi requirement. The thought of having a loaded gun in the house wouldn't make me feel safer at all, but my dog does somehow. Having a trained guard dog that could also shoot a gun could have it's advantages.

Restrooms aren't pricey; "for customers only" is usually more a suggestion than a rule. Showers are a little trickier, enough so where daily can be an unrealistic standard — not all shelters provide showers, although many do. There are still tricks though; for example, before arriving at a shelter with showers, I would show my driver's licence at the Fort Bliss gate, go to one of the soldiers' gyms, and use the showers there. Might be wrong (I'm authorized MWR privilages until 2015, do gyms count?), but even so I don't think Big Army much cares about unauthorized destinking.

Of course not. The communal living arrangements of shelters mean not only that weapons are always considered contraband, but also anything you carry is more prone to theft.

Do you ever feel tempted to go full Jeremiah Johnson and try to live off the grid entirely?

I tried to put into words how stupid, ignorant and simple minded I thought that first part was, but I failed. Might as well probate me.

Network administration and security sounds like a nice paycheck, you're unemployed because of location you live at? If so do you consider moving out the state or anywhere further?
